EXCLUSIVE: Sonu Nigam says music companies hated him for talking about the Copyright Act: "I was ready and knew that if I raised my voice against it, they would start cutting my songs"

One of the biggest singing sensations Sonu Nigam has worked with several music directors in the film industry. Hailed has one of the most prolific singers for several decades, Sonu Nigam recently said that he had to take charge to talk about copyright issues and bring in the balance of friendship between music companies and singers.

 

EXCLUSIVE: Sonu Nigam says music companies hated him for talking about the Copyright Act: "I was ready and knew that if I raised my voice against it, they would start cutting my songs"

 

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Sonu Nigam was asked if he was ever worried about the fact that new-age singers would overshadow him. He said in Hindi, “Woh toh hona hi tha, maine pange joh itne le rakhey the. (That was inevitable as I had irked so many people).”

 

Talking about the Copyright Act and how the companies hated him, he added, “Copyright ke liye joh main khada hua tha, toh obviously, music companies hated me. Billi ke gale mein ghanta kaun bandhega? Woh ghanti mujhe bandhni thi. Toh jab ghanti bandhoge toh billi toh kaategi hi na! Par main taiyaar tha uss cheez ke liye ki main aese karunga toh mere gaane kaatne shuru kar denge yeh log, kisi aur se dub karayenge. ‘Sonu ko mat gawao, isko ban karo.’ (Who will address the elephant in the room? I did that and if you stand for a cause then you will have to face the consequences of it too. But I was ready and knew that if I raised my voice against it, they would start cutting my songs, and get dubbing done by other artists. ‘Don’t let Sonu sing, ban him'.)”

 

Sonu Nigam continued, “Main paida hi isliye hua tha, mera industry mein aane ka purpose yeh tha ke main gaana toh gaun lekin kuch cheez sahi kar ke jaun, wo main kar ke jaa raha hoon. Ab ja ke Copyright Act pura hua hai, ab finally music companies and singers me dosti ho gayi hain wapis. Sab pyaar se reh rahe hai. Mera purpose yeh tha is line me aane ka. Mai nahin karta toh koi kar nahin pata. (I was born for this. My purpose in joining the industry was to not just sing but also bring a positive change in it. After years, the Copyright Act is complete. Now, singers and music companies have started being friendly with each other. Everyone is living in harmony. My purpose was this. If I wouldn’t have done this, no one could.)”

 

Sonu said that now there’s friendship between singers and music companies. He said, “Par usko karne k liye kisiko sacrifice dena tha. Toh mujhe dena pada mere peak pe. (But to do this someone had to sacrifice. I did that at the peak of my career.)”
