EXCLUSIVE: Karan Johar on polarizing reactions on Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna by addressing infidelity in marriage: “We just brush it under the carpet as a society many times”

Bollywood Hungama, India's leading entertainment portal, held its 2-day OTT India Fest in Mumbai on October 18-19, 2023. The event features a diverse lineup of panel discussions, fireside chats, master classes, and workshops, as well as an awards ceremony to honour the artists from the OTT entertainment industry. The first day of the event commenced with a panel discussion on India's burgeoning OTT landscape, featuring some of the industry's leading experts and decision-makers. Filmmaker and producer Karan Johar, known for his numerous contributions to Indian cinema, spoke about his 25 years in cinema. He talked about several milestones in his career. He also addressed the topic of infidelity which was shown in his film Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna which received polarising reviews at the time of the release in 2006.

When asked about the same, Karan Johar said, “It's a topic that people are awkward to address. It's the topic of infidelity. Someone told me you're endorsing infidelity and I always say that, ‘How do you endorse something that sold out?’ It's reality. We just brush it under the carpet as a society many times, because we don't want to come face to face with the harsh truth of the fact that there could be infidelity in a marriage, in a relationship and that could be an existing situation. It's still happening in young relationships. You are always wondering if your partner has engaged in intimacy with somebody else; or has walked out of the boundary of the relationship. It's a reality. But we always try to make it internal. We don't like to watch the reality of it. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, we made the reality real and cinematic. And I think it made a lot of people awkward. So one couple once came and told me, ‘Why should we tell each other that we liked Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna?’ Because then the other one will ask ‘What did you like about it?’ And then you will have to say something. So it's best to just say we didn't like it and move on and go back to our happy marriage.”

 

Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta and Amitabh Bachchan, the film was released in 2006.
