Our Blues Review: An omnibus series featuring Shin Min Ah, Kim Woo Bin, Lee Byung Hun, Lee Jung Eun, Cha Seung Won and Han Ji Min depicts bittersweet story of love, life, loss and reality

A new Korean drama Our Blues, which is also simultaneously airing on Netflix, tells the stories of a bunch of individuals living on the Jeju Island. The drama premiered on April 9, 2022. The drama features an ensemble cast of Shin Min Ah, Kim Woo Bin, Lee Byung Hun, Lee Jung Eun, Cha Seung Won and Han Ji Min. The narration of the drama is in an omnibus style, with each pair having a story of their own, and occasionally they overlap with each other. The first two episodes showed a promising start to the show. The audiences are introduced to the main cast and their lives. Each character has their own ‘blues’ to deal with. Each character is eccentric and relatable to the audiences. Ahead of the episode 3 that airs tonight, let’s have a look at the show.

The first episode introduces us to all the stories that would be revealed in the later episodes. First, we have Choi Han Su (played by Cha Seung Won) and Jung Eun Hui (played by Lee Jung Hyun). Han Su was Eun Hui’s first love but soon the two went their separate ways. No Han Su is back in Jeju. He got transferred as the branch manager. His wife and daughter are in the USA for the daughter’s golfing education. He is completely broke, and dejected with the struggles he is facing. He meets Eun Hui his childhood friend. From the looks of it, he is warming up to Eun Hui just to get some money to cover his daughter’s expenses.

 

Then we have Kim Woo Bin as Park Jung Joon and Han Ji Min as Lee Young Ok. Jung Joon is the captain of a show and also helps out Eun Hui at the fish market. Young Ok is a hanyeo meaning a female diver. She is bubbly and quirky. The two share a tension and sparks might fly soon.

 

Next, we have Lee Byung Hun as Lee Dong Seok and Shin Min Ah Min Seon Ah. Their story was shown in a flashback from seven years ago. Min Seon Ah used to go out with Dong Seok, but when he kissed Seon Ah she jerked back and later revealed that she didn’t see like Dong Seok romantically. Dong Seok is a hot-headed guy and he has strained relations with his mother as well. Not much was divulged about Min Seon Ah, and if the trailer is taken into consideration, then there is sure some heartbreak in store, and not just the romantic kind.

 

The scenery and the quaint lifestyle of the island inhabitants is capture beautifully. The accents of the locals, to their lifestyle and livelihood depicted in the drama complete the immersive experience of watching the slice of life drama. There’s unrequited love, childhood friendships, new blossoming love and experiences of a countryside upbringing. The roaring seas, the muttering fish boats, the chatter of the crowd, to the silence of the shore – all these sounds add in to the viewing of the drama. The drama transports the audience to the scene. Each cast member delivers their lines perfectly and with honest emotions. The two episodes have dropped opening spots to take the drama ahead next week, and the foreshadowing prepares the audiences for what comes next.

 

We also have other supporting cast members who have lived their lives on the island and know everything about everyone. Choi Young Joon, Uhm Jung Hwa, Go Doo Shim among other form a part of the supporting cast. The drama is directed by Kim Gyu Tae who is known for dramas like Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, It’s Okay That’s Love, That Winter the wind blows, to name a few. Noh Hee Kyung, the drama’s writer also worked with Director Kim Gyu Tae for It’s Okay That’s Love and That Winter the wind blows. The duo has given audiences some tear jerker dramas, and if the trailer is anything to go by, Our Blues will also be a tear jerker but healing drama.
