“They asked me to call him sir”: Kader Khan and Amitabh Bachchan’s Friendship Fallout

Late Bollywood legend Kader Khan and megastar Amitabh Bachchan shared one of the Hindi film industry’s most enduring creative and personal bonds, beginning in the 1970s and spanning nearly two decades. Khan, who was both a prolific screenwriter and character actor, worked closely with Bachchan on many major films including Benaam (1974), Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978) and Naseeb (1981). Their collaboration was built on mutual respect and trust, both on and off screen.

Film historian Hanif Zaveri told Meri Saheli that their friendship was so strong that Bachchan once personally intervened to secure a script deal. “‘Amitabh and Kader Khan shared such a strong rapport that one phone call from Amitabh was enough for Kader Khan to agree to write Khuddar without taking any money initially,” Zaveri recalled, noting how their combined efforts helped make the film a hit.

 

At one point, amid rumours that Bachchan might retire from films and pursue politics, Khan emphatically defended his friend’s career choices. “Amitabh Bachchan is not leaving films, he is just taking some rest. And if Amitabh Bachchan really leaves the film industry, then I will leave too,” Khan was quoted as saying, a testament to both personal loyalty and admiration.

 

However, according to Zaveri, their close bond eventually weakened. A viral interview clip resurfaced in which Khan described a shift in Bachchan’s behaviour after he returned to films following a stint in politics. Khan said a producer had urged him to address Bachchan as “sir,” but he refused: “I could not do that. How could I suddenly call him ‘Sir’? That is where our differences began and we drifted apart.”
