29 years of Judaai: Sridevi once said about her character, "She is a terrible person and I had to make her likeable"

Director Raj Kanwar and producer Boney Kapoor’s iconic film Judaai completed 29 years today. The film, which starred Sridevi, Anil Kapoor and Urmila Matondkar, told an unusual story of a money-minded wife selling off her husband to a woman in return for a fortune.

Judaai turned out to be a successful film aided by songs like ‘Pyaar Vyaar Karte Karte’, ‘Mujhe Pyaar Hua’ and the title track. But more than that, the film is remembered for the late Sridevi’s tremendous performance as a greedy wife. She played the character in such a way that the audience didn’t look at her with anger but with a certain degree of wonder. It is easily one of the best performances of her illustrious career.

 

She once told this writer how difficult it was to do Judaai. “I had to play this really greedy woman who is willing to sell off her husband. She is a terrible person and I had to make her likeable. I would say Judaai was one of my toughest roles. I had to somehow make my character Kajal not look like a vamp. She was so money-minded that she is too blind to see she is destroying her marriage. This woman was completely alien to my nature.”

 

This writer remembers sitting with Yash Chopra just after the release of Judaai. Yash ji picked up the phone and dialled Sridevi at the Breach Candy where the Diva had just delivered Janhvi. “Sri, listen after Judaai, you can’t just be a wife and a mother. You have to continue acting. I already have a script ready for you,” Yash ji said.

 

This writer has no clue about Sridevi’s response.
