REVEALED: Pankaj Tripathi was Alia Bhatt's tutor for Udta Punjab; the veteran actor trained the actress daily and helped her in mastering Jharkhandi dialect

While having an in-depth discussion with Mid-Day, Alia Bhatt said that Pankaj Tripathi tutored her for a month for her role in Udta Punjab (2016). In this thriller-drama, Alia played the role of a migrant girl, Bauria. Alia recalled that Pankaj tutored her for a month. She would meet him daily and help her in mastering body language and Jharkhandi dialect. She also learnt to play hockey, though it just served as a back-story of Bauria.

Alia Bhatt confessed that Udta Punjab was the only time when she fully embraced the idea of ‘method acting’. She kept away from her cell phone, worked on her character, interacted with local youth, etc. She said that she did it to prove to herself, and not to the world, that she was a “chameleon as an actor”.

Alia Bhatt then revealed that she learnt about Udta Punjab through Shahid Kapoor, with whom she was working, in Shaandaar (2015). She approached director Abhishek Chaubey to sign her for the role. Alia admitted that the initial look test didn’t fully convince the expert director. However, she ultimately bagged the role.

Alia Bhatt, however, added that working on the film was quite challenging. She shot for the role for 20 days and stated, “I don’t know how I would have survived it for, say, 60 days.”

Alia Bhatt’s efforts bore fruit. She was praised for her act and even won the Filmfare for Best Actress. As for Pankaj Tripathi, he became a sensation soon after Udta Punjab, thanks to his performances in Newton (2017), Stree (2018), Mirzapur (2018), Gunjan Saxena (2020), Ludo (2020), Mimi (2021), '83 (2021), etc.
