The chapter of Emergency has stayed on to be an intriguing, mysterious and suspenseful piece in the Indian history. What really happened between 1975 to 1977 is either spoken about only in close circles or has been accompanied by ton loads of rumors, speculations and hearsay. No wonder, with Indu Sarkar, it is quite apparent that Madhur Bhandarkar is choosing to make a hard hitting statement. Though one was apprehensive about how much would be reveal with the film and how much would be actually conceal, what one has seen so far of Indu Sarkar has given a good enough indication that he is going all the way here.
“For starters, he has got his cast picture perfect for the film. If the lady playing Indira Gandhi is a replica of the Congress leader, Neil Nitin Mukesh’s casting as Sanjay Gandhi has been a master stroke. It is quite apparent that he has not just got the look right, he has also stepped into the characterization well enough to make a right impression on screen. To play real life characters in a realistic space is quite challenging and this is where true talent comes into picture,” says our insider.
However, one actor who could well be relishing this experience of being on a stage big enough is Kirti Kulhari. The actress is playing the central protagonist in the film and with Madhur Bhandarkar calling the shots; there is already a buzz around whether yet another National Award winning performance is on the anvil.
“The young woman has earned this space,” a source close to the filmmaker says, “She has been around for a while but audiences recognized her true potential only with Pink where she had a role parallel to that of Taapsee Pannu. Now, in Indu Sarkar, she has come up with a powerhouse performance and that too in a difficult space where she is required to stammer. You have seen her in some of the scenes from the film now and it is quite apparent that she has nailed the part. Par aage aage dekho hota hai kya; there are so many more surprises in store.”
As for the surprises, what has turned out to be pleasant indeed are the dialogues that have been put together by Sanjay Chhel. They are not just hard hitting and acidic, they don’t steer away from calling spade a spade, something that could well lead to a controversy in the offering as the film gets added traction and comes close to the release.
“Making a film like Indu Sarkar isn’t something that you do every year. It is once in a lifetime phenomenon for all involved, be it the writer, the director or the actors,” the source adds, “If you have picked up the mantle, you better get it right and that too in the first time itself. Once everything is perfect on paper and actors like Anupam Kher and Tota Roy Chowdhury come on board as actors alongside Kirti Kulhari and Neil Nitin Mukesh, you have to be honest to your execution.”
Well, if the early look of Indu Sarkar is anything to go by, Madhur Bhandarkar indeed has got it right!
