Deepika Padukone’s latest release Padmaavat finally hit screens yesterday. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and also starring Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor the film has been in the eye of the storm since the past couple of months with various groups demanding a ban on the release of the film. However despite all the obstacles Padmaavat released amid high security to a good response.
In this box office special report we take a look at the opening day collections of Padmaavat while comparing the same to Deepika Padukone’s previously released films. Collecting Rs. 19 cr, Padmaavat become Deepika Padukone’s fourth highest opening day grosser unable to surpass the collections of her previous releases like Happy New Year that collected Rs. 44.97 cr, Chennai Express that collected Rs. 19.45 cr, and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani that collected Rs. 19.45 cr.
On the other hand though, the opening day collections of Padmaavat that do not feature the Rs. 5 cr earned from the paid previews on Wednesday do manage to out beat the collections of Deepika other releases like Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela that collected Rs. 16 cr, Race 2 that collected Rs. 15.12 cr, Bajirao Mastani that collected Rs. 12.80 cr, Cocktail that collected Rs. 11 cr, Tamasha that collected Rs. 10.94 cr, Housefull that collected Rs. 10 cr, and Desi Boyz that had collected Rs. 8 cr.
Now all that remains to be seen is whether Padmaavat that still continues to face issues in certain territories in India does manage to become Deepika’s highest opening weekend grosser.
