The upcoming film Varanasi, directed by S.S. Rajamouli, continues to generate international buzz, with the project recently being presented at Comic Con Experience Mexico 2026. Producer S. S. Karthikeya represented the film at the global event, where he spoke about its thematic influences and cultural resonance.
During his interaction, Karthikeya highlighted similarities between Indian storytelling traditions and narratives rooted in Latin American history, noting how both cultures draw inspiration from their mythologies and heritage. “There are lot of similarities that we have seen like even the lot of comics or the stories of the film coming out from Mexico are drawn from their history from the Aztec or the Mayan civilization, and in India we really get inspired by our epics by Ramayana or the Mahabharat. In Varanasi, we have 20 minutes of Ramayana, so culturally there is lot of similarities between Latin American audience and American audience”.
“Going in the city of Mexico and meeting people is so welcoming and I find same kind of warmth in my city in my country, and the food, even the spice I don’t think I can get that spice from anywhere else apart from India and when I come to Mexico and also the family values that you kind of hear the Mexicans hold I find that also very similar, and the family values is very integral part significant in the story of Varanasi and I feel there are lot of factors people will relate to, and enjoy the film.", he added.
The film has already been making headlines globally, particularly after its first glimpse was unveiled at a trailer showcase event at Le Grand Rex, one of Europe’s largest cinema screens. The presentation reportedly received a strong response, with audiences reacting enthusiastically to the visuals and scale.
Varanasi features a high-profile cast led by Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Early character reveals, including Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, Prithviraj Sukumaran as Kumbha, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Mandakini, have already sparked conversations across social media platforms.
Positioned as a large-scale cinematic spectacle, the film is expected to blend mythology-inspired elements with a contemporary narrative. With its international outreach and strong visual presentation, Varanasi is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Indian releases in the coming years.
The film is slated for a theatrical release on April 7, 2027, and continues to build momentum as more details emerge.
