Sophie Turner sues Joe Jonas for illegally keeping their children in NYC amid divorce battle

Earlier this month, it was reported that singer Joe Jonas and actress Sophie Turner were officially headed for divorce. On September 5, Joe Jonas filed for a dissolution of marriage with Sophie Turner in Miami. As per a report in People publication, the filing claimed: "the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken." As per the divorce filing, the pair have a prenup in place. Now, Sophie Turner has sued Jonas for illegally keeping their two little girls in New York City and not sending them back to London.

As per a report in TMZ, in the court documents, Sophie claims the couple had decided to make England their permanent home in April 2023 and regularly discussed raising their daughters in the UK and had reportedly begun searching for schools for the older one. However, Joe wanted the kids to be on the Jonas Brothers’ Tour with him in the US as he had relatively more time while Sophie was busy shooting a ‘very intense’ series. The plan was to send the kids back to London in September as per their agreement. However, she claims that Jonas “refuses to send the children home to England with their Mother.”

According to The Messenger, Turner’s lawyers have cited the Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. The documents read, “Objectives of the Convention are to secure the immediate return of children wrongfully removed or wrongfully retained in any Contracting State, and to ensure that ‘rights to custody’ under the law of one Contracting State are effectively respected in other Contracting States.”

In his statement, Jonas provided his side saying, “This is an unfortunate legal disagreement about a marriage that is sadly ending. When language like 'abduction' is used, it is misleading at best, and a serious abuse of the legal system at worst. The children were not abducted. After being in Joe's care for the past three months at the agreement of both parties, the children are currently with their mother," the statement added. "Sophie is making this claim only to move the divorce proceedings to the UK and to remove the children from the U.S. permanently.”

He claims that he was okay with their kids, who are citizens in the US, to be raised in both the UK and the US. She has also claimed that she found out about the divorce through the media whereas Jonas says that she was fully made aware of the fact that he was going to file the papers.

Shortly after Jonas filed for divorce, Sophie and Joe released a statement which read, “After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy and our children.”

After a few years of dating, Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas got married in a surprise ceremony in Las Vegas and followed it with a grand ceremony in the French countryside. In 2020, they welcomed their first child, daughter Willa, and welcomed their second child in July 2022.
