“Yeh Kya Banaya Hai?” Director Anees Bazmee reveals critics’ reaction after first trial of Pyaar Toh Hona Hi Tha

Filmmaker Anees Bazmee is basking in the success of his current hit Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 that is still going strong at the box office even weeks after its release. The director recently had an exclusive candid conversation with Bollywood Hungama about his movies, direction and how he takes critics’ reactions towards his films.

One of the films that he spoke about was Pyaar Toh Hona Hi Tha. He revealed that this Kajol-Ajay Devgn starrer romance was rejected post the first trial.

Anees Bazmee opened up about the rejection of Pyaar Toh Hona Hi Tha in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama. He said, “I remember the first trial of Pyaar Toh Hona Hi Tha, the critics did not tell me if it was a good or a bad film, they simply asked me ‘Yeh Kya Banaaya Hai?’ (What have I made) because at that time Ajay Devgn worked only in action films. He made an entrance on a horse back sometimes, or on a motorbike. And this film was a pure romantic love story. I think it was Ajay’s first romantic film in his career. So, everyone kept asking me what have I made?”

Revealing further, he said that such a reaction after the first trial broke his heart and scared him. He reworked on some scenes and their emotions and said, “According to me, I think it turned out well. My parents, my friends, everyone prayed for the movie to achieve success. I, myself, made many prayers for this film to work out well. I wanted this film to work because the situations were not the best and I was tired of the feedback by people. I am so happy for the success that this film achieved.”

He disclosed how he thinks that one must be confident about what one has in mind and what they write. “I make films to enjoy them. Somewhere or the other, I still identify myself as the audience. When I go to watch the films made by others, I don’t go as a critic. I watch the film, I whistle, I clap, I even cry. You can understand that when I like a film, it works very well but when I don’t like a film, it is very difficult for it to work well.”

Anees Bazmee, as a director of Pyaar Toh Hona Hi Tha , was very proud of the way things went for the film. He believed that the film was experimental and unique. His last directorial Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 stars Kartik Aaryan, Tabu, Kiara Advani, and Rajpal Yadav among several other stars of Bollywood. The film has created a record at the box office by crossing Rs. 150 crores only weeks after its release.
