With Brahmastra releasing in less than 24 hours, Bollywood Hungama spoke to trade experts to find out their views about the film and a lot more.
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “The advance is terrific. I have been talking to a lot of distributors and exhibitors especially. They are so happy. It has given them a ray of hope as it proves that people are wanting to watch a film. Many were writing off the film industry and claiming that ‘film industry bandh ho rahi hai’. But an advance booking of this kind rejuvenates the entire industry. It gives hope for a better future that all is not lost.”
He further said, “I spoke to two prominent producers. They said that the advance booking is like a shot in the arm. Earlier, they were wondering whether to plan big films. Now they know that they can indeed make a big-screen entertainer. Last month, the producers were disheartened, after the debacle of Aamir Khan-starrer Laal Singh Chaddha. They were wondering, ‘Yeh ho kya raha hai? One more wicket down? That too a crucial one?’.”
Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, in agreement, opined, “The advance is good and has been trending quite well. Apart from the actors and production houses concerned, it is more important for the sentiment of the fraternity for the film to do well. Films have been falling left, right and centre. The audiences have been vehemently rejecting bad films at the box office. The scenario has completely changed post-pandemic. Keeping these factors in mind, it is very heartening to see that at least, something seems to have worked. I just hope that the content is appreciated as that’s a crucial aspect.”
When asked about the opening day number, Taran Adarsh replied, “The way it’s going and if spot bookings are strong, the film can take an opening in the range of Rs. 25-30 crores. If the appreciation is strong enough, it can go beyond as well.”
Akshaye Rathi, a film exhibitor and distributor, said, “The 3D version of the film is very heavily in demand. Hence, at a higher average ticket price, you have some very solid ticket sales which, in my opinion, will ensure that a Rs. 25 crores opening is pretty much in place. Depending on the current booking and the performance of the film in the 2D version, in the single screens, independent multiplexes and the Southern markets, the collections can go significantly upwards.”
Girish Johar stated, “I feel day 1 will be around Rs. 23-25 crores in all languages. If it's appreciated, the collections can go further up. For Ranbir Kapoor, it’ll be the third film to have a big non-holiday start.” He added, “There’s no doubt that it’ll be beating Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’s first-day earnings.”
Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise in Jaipur, said, “An opening of Rs. 22 crores is possible. If the advance jumps dramatically on Wednesday and Thursday, then it can go higher. You never know.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan, however, cautioned, “As per the advance booking, it seems to be a film that’ll open in the range of Rs. 18-20 crores. Some are predicting an opening of Rs. 30-40 crores. But looking at the trends, it doesn’t seem so. A Rs. 20 crores opening is good as well as bad. It’s good because it means it’ll take the biggest opening of the year for a Hindi film. But it’s not sufficient for a film that has a budget of more than Rs. 400 crores. A film like KGF - Chapter 2 opened at Rs. 50 crores on day 1. That is the potential the box office has. In such a scenario, if you open at Rs. 20 or Rs. 25 crores or even Rs. 30 crores, it’s not sufficient.”
“In Mumbai and Thane, the evening shows will be affected due to the Ganpati Visarjan. In certain stretches, the effect will be more. For example, Andheri Link Road has three theatres. Those cinema halls as well as PVR Juhu will get limited footfalls as the roads will be shut or restricted. And this is an important belt for the film business.”
