Mithun Chakraborty calls out ‘propaganda’ debate, questions Bengal Files ban while Dhurandhar breaks records

Veteran actor highlights selective outrage in cinema, praises Ranveer Singh starrer’s massive box office success amid controversy.

Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty has weighed in on the ongoing debate around ‘propaganda’ in Indian cinema, raising questions about what he describes as selective resistance towards certain films. The National Award-winning actor drew a sharp comparison between the blockbuster success of Dhurandhar and the hurdles faced by his own film Bengal Files, which was unable to secure a release in West Bengal.

Addressing the criticism surrounding Dhurandhar, Chakraborty pointed out what he believes is a contradiction in how films are perceived and treated. “You didn't allow the release of Bengal Files here. What more can you say? People are calling Dhurandhar too as a propaganda film. If that was the case, they should have stopped Dhurandhar as well. Now after Dhurandhar was released, you say it's propaganda. But you didn't even see a reel of Bengal Files. Since that day, you went against it and didn't even let the film release in Bengal.”

The actor also expressed disappointment over the response to Bengal Files, a film rooted in historical events. “Nothing could be more disheartening than that. That’s a film on Noah Khalil Masekar, which is not even a film based on present day. It is historic - even before our independence. You didn't let the release of that film. You can say ‘Dadagiri’ or whatever you want.”

While voicing concerns about his own project, Chakraborty praised the performance of the Dhurandhar franchise, directed by Aditya Dhar and headlined by Ranveer Singh. The first instalment, Dhurandhar (2025), emerged as a major success, with its sequel Dhurandhar: The Revenge (2026) further amplifying its box office impact. Defending the film against allegations of being agenda-driven, Mithun added, “But Dhurandhar broke all records. So many people must have seen the film. People from every community have seen it. Everyone has praised it. And only after watching it 2-3 times, does a film perform this well at the box office.”

Dhurandhar The Revenge continues its strong theatrical run despite competition from the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 season. The film features an ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, and Rakesh Bedi, and follows the journey of Jaskirat Singh Rangi.

As conversations around cinematic narratives and creative freedom continue, Mithun Chakraborty’s remarks spotlight the ongoing tension between artistic expression and administrative decisions in the film industry.
