Reports of ill health are duly cut down by Mani Ratnam. When I contacted him with concerns regarding his health, Mani, who has history of heart ailments, responded, “All good. Everything is fine. In fact I’m at my office as we connect. I am getting ready for my next film.” This puts an end to the ‘ill’ informed speculations in the press about Ratnam’s health which have been appearing for the past two days. Some medically overzealous portals also claim that the maverick moviemaker Mani Ratnam has suffered a “cardiac arrest.”
The concerns about the condition of Mani Ratnam’s heart date back to 2009 ever since he checked himself into a hospital after a suspected heart attack. This was while he was shooting for Raavan with two of his most favourite actors Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan. Mani had felt uneasy. He quietly finished his work for the day and checked into the Apollo hospital in Chennai.
Again in 2015 there was a health scare when reports of a heart attack surfaced all over in print and on the net. Now again the reports of a heart attack have assailed Mani Ratnam’s very reclusive life. And he is not amused.
These periodical alarmist reports about Mani’s health really pisses him off. In fact he has started seeing the humour of it and wanted to know after the latest health scare if every time he is going to be seen near a hospital people will presume he’s checking himself in for a heart attack. That would amount to more attacks than the heart can take.
Mani Ratnam is now getting ready to shoot Ponniyin Selvan in Tamil, his fourth film starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan after Iruvar (Tamil), Guru (Hindi) and Raavan (Hindi-Tamil).
