Manoj Desai, the executive director of G7 multiplex and Maratha Mandir cinema, has recalled taking risks while producing the 1992 film Khuda Gawah. The film, which starred Amitabh Bachchan, Sridevi and Danny Denzongpa, was shot in Afghanistan during the Soviet-Afghan War.
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Desai said that he had to take many risks while producing the film. He asserted, “While making Khuda Gawah, we took a lot of risks. If even one bullet had hit Amit ji [Amitabh Bachchan], the whole matter would have ended. If it had hit Sridevi, the matter would have ended because a war was going on. We had placed cameras on tanks during the war and made the film. So, I saw the world. So, now I can tell which movie comes where and how it performs.”
When asked if he ever doubted himself during the making of the film, the veteran producer added, “I had once doubted myself when I met Teji Bachchan ji. She had said that if something happened to Munna and Jaya wore a white saree, you would also commit suicide, and your wife would wear a white saree. This was Teji Bachchan's warning.”
He further added, “After that, I received another warning from Sridevi's mother. 'Manoj ji, if anything happens to her, don't come back, otherwise I will kill you. This was the situation everywhere. I also met Danny [Denzongpa]'s wife, and she too said - ‘he should come [back safely].'”
For the unversed, Khuda Gawah was extensively shot in and around the cities of Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif in Afghanistan under the security of the Afghan Air Force.
