Over the last decade or so, mainstream Bollywood has seen the rise of biopics of people from different fields. Producer Anand Pandit is all set to bring freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s life on celluloid in the film Swantantra Veer Savarkar. It will see Randeep Hoda don the role of both the titular character and the director.
Savarkar has been a topic of debate in the country in recent years. Although he has a lot of admirers, there are also some people who are critical of him. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Anand Pandit addressed this point.
The producer said, “There are two sides to a coin. Our (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi sahab is doing such a fine job but there are people who are critical of him. Gandhi did such good work but there were people who used to criticize him. This will always be there. I believe when people are criticizing you, you are doing something right. Similarly, some people might or might not agree with Savarkar ji’s theories, but they can’t deny that he was a totally patriotic person.”
Sharing the reason for backing Swatantra Veer Savarkar, Pandit added, “I always like patriotic films and I have enormous respect for Veer Savarkar ji. I have read a lot about him and followed him. I feel he hasn’t been portrayed in front of the people in the right way on a big canvas till now. So, I thought I should do this to give something back to the society. Keeping that in mind, I felt I should do this film. More than the commercial aspect, I am interested in leaving behind something for the coming generations.”
Swatantra Veer Savarkar was earlier supposed to be directed by Mahesh Manjrekar. But after he quit the film, Randeep took over as the director in what is his debut directorial. “He has done very well,” said Pandit. “As a director also he has done a fantastic job, I must say. Definitely, after this film he will be kind of established as a good director. And he is a very studious actor. He is one of the finest method actors. He perfectly gets into the character he is playing.”
When asked the reason to choose the main lead to direct the film, Pandit said, “He is already in Savarkar’s character in real life as well (because of his method acting). So, we thought why not give the responsibility of the direction to someone who is living Savarkar’s character.”
