Naseeruddin Shah has claimed that he was removed from a Mumbai University programme just hours before it was scheduled, without any clarification or even an apology, a move he described as “insulting and disappointing.”

In a recent write-up for The Indian Express, Shah shared that he had been invited to attend Jashn-e-Urdu on the 1st of February, an event organised by the university’s Urdu department. The programme was planned as an evening of readings and interaction with students, and Shah said he had agreed to participate. However, he alleged that on the night before the event, he was informed that his presence was no longer required.
What upset the actor further was that he claims the organisers later told the audience that he had personally refused to attend, something he strongly denied. “The university, after informing me that I needn't attend (on the night of January 31, and giving no reason for it, forget an apology) obviously considered this not insulting enough. So they decided to rub a little salt in by announcing to the audience that I had refused to be there," he wrote. Shah called the situation humiliating, adding that the lack of courtesy and transparency left him disappointed.
The actor also hinted that the decision may have been linked to his outspoken views, saying he has often been targeted for expressing opinions. The incident has triggered a wider conversation online, with many calling it an example of how cultural and academic platforms are increasingly becoming cautious about public figures who are known for speaking their mind.
