Box Office blues: India’s 2024 collections drop to Rs. 11,833 cr despite Pushpa 2 and Stree 2’s blockbuster success

en Bollywood News Box Office blues: India’s 2024 collections drop to Rs. 11,833 cr despite Pushpa 2 and Stree 2’s blockbuster success

Post-pandemic, the theatrical business has been going through an unpredictable phase. The restrictions were lifted completely in 2022 but it took a while for cinemas to bounce back. The perception that people are interested in seeing only big spectacle films on the big screen proved to be a challenge although the myth was soon broken. 2023 was a significant year for many film industries of India, especially Bollywood. Sadly, in 2024, the business took a dip.

As per The Ormax Box Office Report 2024, while the total gross box office collections of 2023 were Rs. 12,226 crores, the 2024 earnings dropped by around 3.32 % and stood at Rs. 11833 crores. The figure is definitely better than the 2022 collections which were Rs. 10,637 crores. Also, with these earnings, 2024 became the second-best year of all time at the box office.

Footfalls
Since the earnings took a hit, so did the footfalls. The footfalls declined by 6% compared to 2023. In 2023, 94.3 crore footfalls were recorded while in 2024, it was 88.30 crores. What was concerning was that the number is lower than 2022 footfalls (89.20) crores, which was a year when the cinema business was still struggling to get back on its feet. The number also is less than the all-time high of 2019, that is, 103 crores.

ATP
The Average Ticket Price (ATP), however, continued to grow. While it was Rs. 119 and Rs. 130 in 2022 and 2023 respectively, in 2024, it was Rs. 134. The positive side is that the ATP has grown in double digits over the last two years but in 2024, it rose only by 3%.

Significant milestones

Only the Telugu, Malayalam, Gujarati and Bengali industries showed growth in collections and footfalls in 2024 compared to 2023. Meanwhile, the films of Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Punjabi, Marathi and also the Hollywood industries fail to go past the 2023 number, which brought the overall India box office number down as well.

The three saving grace films of the year were Pushpa 2 – The Rule, Kalki 2898 AD and Stree 2. These were the only films that crossed the Rs. 500 crore mark.

Malayalam cinema, on the other hand, went on a historic high from collections of Rs. 572 crores in 2023 to Rs. 1165 crores in 2024. The industry crossed the Rs. 1000 crore mark for the first time ever.

Gujarati cinema was the next best as it had a 66% increase in collections, from Rs. 50 crores in 2023 to Rs. 84 crores. A major factor behind it was the success of the horror comedy Jhamkudi, which collected Rs. 20 crores plus.

Lastly, Hollywood film collections plummeted by 17%. The 2024 earnings were Rs. 941 crores, down from Rs. 1139 crores in 2023. If we take out the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, it was the first time since 2014 that the collections slipped below the Rs. 1000 crore mark.
