Director Anubhuti Kashyap has addressed the polarising response to the climax of her recently released film Accused, which premiered on Netflix. Starring Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Rannta, the film has sparked discussion among viewers, particularly over its unconventional ending.

In an interview with The Indian Express, Kashyap explained that the climax was a deliberate creative choice. According to the filmmaker, she deliberately avoided a conventional thriller-style reveal to focus the narrative on the central character's emotional journey rather than the identity of the culprit.
“We’re so attuned to watching thrillers that we’ve seen so many stories where someone close to you has done that. So, we wanted to avoid that,” Kashyap said. She added that research suggested some real-life cases were linked to workplace jealousy, which influenced the direction of the story.
Calling it a calculated risk, the filmmaker acknowledged that the ending could leave some viewers unsatisfied. “It’s a risk I took because I knew a lot of people would find it underwhelming. Because eventually, it becomes about the villain. But I was trying to consciously avoid that,” she said.
Kashyap emphasised that the film was never intended to be centred on the mystery of the perpetrator. “It’s not about who’s done it. It’s about this person’s journey, before and after the accusation, and what’s changed in her. Which is why I quickly move to something else,” she explained.
Produced by Karan Johar’s banner Dharmatic Entertainment, Accused explores the emotional and social consequences faced by a woman after a serious allegation disrupts her life. The film started streaming on the OTT giant from February 27.
