Veteran actor, director and theatre practitioner Amol Palekar will be honoured with the META Lifetime Achievement Award 2026, recognising his decades-long contribution to Indian theatre and cinema. The honour will be presented at the 21st edition of the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META), scheduled to take place in New Delhi from March 19 to 25.

Instituted by the Mahindra Group and produced by Teamwork Arts, META is regarded as one of India’s most prestigious theatre festivals, celebrating excellence in stage productions and theatre practitioners across the country. Reacting to the honour, Palekar expressed gratitude and highlighted the importance of theatre in shaping his artistic journey. “Theatre has always been my first love,” he said, adding that the stage has played a crucial role in shaping his approach to storytelling and performance.
Palekar first gained prominence in Hindi cinema during the 1970s, becoming known for portraying relatable, middle-class characters in films such as Rajnigandha, Chhoti Si Baat and Gol Maal. At a time when larger-than-life heroes dominated Bollywood, his understated performances helped popularise a more natural and realistic acting style. Beyond acting, Palekar also built a successful career as a director, exploring unconventional narratives and socially relevant themes. His films, including Ankahee and Paheli, showcased his distinctive storytelling approach.
In theatre, Amol Palekar has been associated with several experimental productions in Marathi theatre, particularly during the early phase of his career when he worked closely with avant-garde theatre groups in Mumbai. He directed and performed in plays such as Aakriet and Dhyaasparva, which were noted for their minimalist staging and strong focus on character-driven storytelling. Over the years, his theatre work has been credited with encouraging more intimate, performance-oriented productions and helping bridge the gap between experimental theatre and mainstream audiences.
The 2026 edition of META has reportedly received a record number of entries from theatre groups across India, with productions representing multiple languages and regions set to compete across several categories during the week-long festival. The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented during the festival’s closing ceremony, honouring Palekar’s enduring influence on both Indian theatre and cinema.
