Actor-filmmaker Saurabh Shukla recently shared an interesting behind-the-scenes story about casting veteran star Dimple Kapadia in his film Jab Khuli Kitaab, describing the experience as nothing short of magical.

Speaking in an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Shukla admitted that he was initially hesitant to approach Kapadia for the film because of her stature in the industry. At the time, the actor had recently appeared in Tenet, which made Shukla feel she might not be interested in a project like his.
Recalling his doubts, Shukla said, “Why not? She is a star in her own right and had just come off doing a Nolan film.”
Despite his hesitation, the script was eventually sent to Kapadia. Shukla expected a polite rejection after some time, assuming the actor would not take up the role. However, the response he received took him completely by surprise.
Sharing the moment he received her call, he said, “Saurabh ji, this is Dimple Kapadia speaking. I read the script, but I won't be doing it.”
For a brief moment, Shukla believed his fears had come true. But Kapadia immediately followed it up with a statement that left him stunned.
He recalled, “But the next line was, ‘I am doing this script, and no one else will do it. You don't go to anyone else.’”
Shukla described the entire experience as deeply memorable, saying he had never imagined that the veteran actor would agree to be part of the film in such a decisive manner. The film also stars Pankaj Kapur and explores the complexities of a long marriage and mature love.
Jab Khuli Kitaab, which focuses on relationships and emotional truths that emerge over decades of togetherness, has been streaming on ZEE5 since March 6.
