As Dev D gears up for its theatrical re-release on April 24, 2026, actor Abhay Deol has shared a nostalgic behind-the-scenes memory from the making of the cult film, offering fans a glimpse into his creative collaboration with director Anurag Kashyap.
Taking to Instagram on April 23, Abhay recalled how a spontaneous exchange between him and Kashyap shaped the approach to one of the film’s memorable moments involving Kalki Koechlin’s character Chanda. Sharing the anecdote, Abhay wrote, “Anurag: ‘you sit here waiting to be let into Chanda’s room and you can hear her having sex’. He said that with a mischievous, almost perverse glint in his eyes.”
He further revealed how he responded to the idea during the discussion. “Me: (a little grossed out but also enjoying Anurag’s sense of humor), ‘but Anurag, Kalki can speak Tamil, Hindi, and English. What if it turns out to be that she’s having phone sex with someone who has a fetish for sex talk in various languages and accents? Dev and the audience discover that once he enters her room?’”
According to Abhay, the exchange reflected the collaborative energy they shared during the shoot. “Anurag pauses, the glint in his eyes gets brighter and his smile gets wider. Nothing makes a scene better than a creative flow between an actor and a director,” he added, before reminding audiences about the film’s return to theatres: “DEV D IS RE RELEASING ON THE 24th OF APRIL (TOMORROW BABY!) AT A PVR CINEMA NEAR YOU!!!!”

The post has drawn attention not only because of the film’s re-release but also due to the history between Abhay Deol and Anurag Kashyap, whose professional relationship had remained strained for several years after the film’s original release in 2009.
Their differences surfaced publicly in 2020 when Kashyap described the actor as “painfully difficult” to work with. Abhay Deol responded strongly at the time, disputing the claims and accusing the filmmaker of misrepresenting events from the shoot. The disagreement later expanded into a larger debate around creative ownership of the film’s concept and interpretation of its ending.
Despite the long period of distance, Kashyap issued a public apology in 2023.
