25 Years of Sirf Tum EXCLUSIVE: Boney Kapoor reveals that Gulshan Kumar offered to give away his BMW to him if the music was a hit; adds that Bhushan Kumar kept his father’s promise and gave him a Mercedes 25 : Bollywood News

Sirf Tum (1999), starring Sanjay Kapoor, Priya Gill and Sushmita Sen, completed 25 years on June 4. The film is remembered for its unusual plot and chartbuster songs and it was also a decent success at the box office. On Sirf Tum’s 25th anniversary, Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke with producer Boney Kapoor who shared a very interesting anecdote.

When prodded about Sirf Tum’s chartbuster soundtrack, Boney Kapoor said, “The music was terrific. Nadeem-Shravan had recorded the music in one sitting. This is because I had paid them in one instalment. They had asked for a certain price. I said, ‘This is what I can offer. And I’ll give you in one go. But mere gaane sab ek saath karo’. I further said, ‘I won’t pay you per song. I’ll pay you everything in advance’. Before the film went on floors, all the songs of the film were recorded.”

Boney continued, “It was during Sirf Tum when Bhushan Kumar gifted me a Mercedes. This is because Gulshan Kumar had promised me to gift one. I had asked for a crore of rupees for the music rights. Gulshan Kumar reasoned, ‘Nahin, bade bhai. Sanjay Kapoor ki picture ka (paisa) itna hona chahiye. Priya Gill bhi chali nahin hai’. He agreed to pay me Rs. 65 lakhs. Our negotiations were going in Gulshan ji’s BMW car. In those days, BMW was not manufactured in India. I told him, ‘Agar picture chal jaayegi, toh yeh BMW aap mujhe doge’! Before the film could be released, he passed away. But I reminded about it to Bhushan Kumar and he gifted a Mercedes car to me. By then, Mercedes cars had started getting assembled in India.”

Boney Kapoor then raised laughs as he revealed, “Once this happened, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’s (1999) makers were like, ‘Hamara music bhi chal gaya hai’! Bhushan Kumar then had to buy a Mitsubishi Lancer for both Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Jhamu Sughand! This is what I had heard.”
