2017 hasn’t been a great year from box office point of view thanks to some big-budget disasters. But on the other hand, a lot of films did great business and many of them even crossed the Rs. 100 and 200 crore mark. History was created as we also had a film that crossed the 500-crore-club. While last year, there were 6 films that crossed the 100-crore-mark, this year 7 films have managed to do so, apart from one film in 200 crore club, 300 crore club and 500 crore club each. Let’s take a look at these grossers:
THE 500 CRORE CLUB
Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion [Rs. 510.98 crore]
This is a dubbed flick and not exactly a Hindi film. It was expected to rock the box office. But no one was ready to see a dubbed film releasing on a non-festive weekend to not just cross the 300-crore-mark but to go past even the 500-crore mark and settle at Rs. 510.98 crore.
THE 300 CRORE CLUB
Tiger Zinda Hai [Rs. 300 crore+]
The last big event film had a rocking opening at the box office. It took full advantage of the four-day weekend and crossed the Rs. 150-crore-mark in just four days. The film is still running in theatres and it’s expected to cross the Rs. 300 crore mark, looking at its great run at the ticket window
THE 200 CRORE CLUB
Golmaal Again [Rs. 205.67 crore]
Comedy films had never done blockbuster business in recent times but Golmaal Again stood out. The comedy, which also had a hint of horror, was loved by the family audiences especially. The appreciation was so much that it became the first film of Ajay Devgn to cross the 200-crore-mark.
THE 100 CRORE CLUB
Judwaa 2 [Rs. 138.61 crore]
The comic caper Judwaa 2 was a hilarious fare that rested on Varun Dhawan’s entertaining performance, smart and funny writing and peppy songs. The film also had the advantage of a four-day weekend it’s no surprise it managed to cross the Rs. 100-crore-mark in 8 days itself
Raees [Rs. 137.51 crore]
Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Raees underperformed as it was expected to do much better. Nevertheless, it managed to reach till Rs. 137.51 crore.
Toilet – Ek Prem Katha [Rs. 134.22 crore]
Despite talking about a taboo topic, Toilet – Ek Prem Katha managed to wow audiences. It even crossed the collections of Rowdy Rathore [Rs. 133.25 crore] and emerged as Akshay Kumar’s biggest grosser.
Tubelight [Rs. 119.26 crore]
This flick starred Salman Khan and was one of the biggest disasters of the year and of Indian cinema. But thanks to the presence of Salman Khan and release during the Eid weekend, it had somewhat decent collections.
Jolly LLB 2 [Rs. 117 crore]
Akshay Kumar’s first film of 2017 also managed to go past Rs. 100 crore in just 12 days thanks to its excellent writing, direction and performances.
Badrinath Ki Dulhania [Rs. 116.68 crore]
This was the first Varun Dhawan in 2017 and it also got into the coveted Rs. 100 crore club. The relatable topic of marriage and dowry teamed with presence of Varun and Alia Bhatt and chartbuster music were big reasons why it pulled audiences to theatres in huge numbers. Also, it released during the festival of Holi and had a four-day weekend.
Kaabil [Rs. 103.84 crore]
This was the second Rs. 100 crore grosser of the year and also the lowest Rs. 100 crore grosser of 2017. Starring Hrithik Roshan as a blind man on a revenge ride, the film faced a lot of competition from Raees, which released on the same day as Kaabil. But the word of mouth was very positive and slowly and steadily, it crossed the Rs. 100-crore-mark in 19 days.
