The story of 2 States is known to everyone. Even if one narrates it out in the review, it wouldn't be a spoiler, and so clearly that's not what I am going to do here. Clearly, adapted from Chetan Bhagat's best seller, the film is clearly not script-less. Like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, the pace in the first half, representing youthful energy, is quite fast. So fast, that some, who have not read the novel, might find themselves in a confused state in some scenes . Too much has been tried to fit in a small hour. Second half, loses its pace at points, but it does have some tickling moments and some really inspiring notes. Acting by the lead pair is not extraordinary, but they do justice to their roles. Arjun Kapoor has stepped on the path of versatility and he is near perfect. Having heard a lot about Alia's acting in Highway (heard, not seen), I had my hopes high to search a Parineeti in her, I must say I was slightly disappointed. But yes, she has come light years ahead of Student Of The Year and she did excellently well. The parents do an outstanding job. Ronit Roy fills the loop-holes in the film with his finesse in the role of a drunken harsh father (reminiscence of Udaan?) The cinematography is fine. Music is above average. Mast Magan is my personal favorite. However, Chandaniya's energetic music prevents the melodrama and the audience's tears. The background score suits well. Overall, 2 States is a must watch for the script, the performances and the honesty of the crew. Though it could have been a better film, it does entertain you and if you are a forgiving viewer, you might love it. I am going with a generous three-and-a-half out of five. I don't want my money back ;-)

"2 States" is a fairly entertaining watch, with adequate levels of sensible content and is surprisingly, in a way an improvement over the adapted book. The film, revolves around the people belonging to the "two states" (of Punjab and Tamil Nadu), but there is a great deal of cultural clash which is the biggest hurdle in the way of marriage of two lovers whose parents are bound by their cultures to not like each other. In the course of attempts made by the two to diminish the differences of their families, their own grew wider. However, as always happens in the times of troubles, some wisdom dawns on men and things gradually turn out differently. It concludes with a wider message of ethnic acceptance. A little obvious and predictable, but well put. The film's most enjoyable parts are full of homely jokes and humour, even with partially-racist pot-shots. Much of it's credit goes to Chetan Bhagat, the book's author and of course to Abhishek Verman, the debutant screenwriter-director, who projects the ability to accommodate vast number of events. At several junctures, work is subtle and Varman smartly omits possible dialogues at places to create a much obvious impact by visuals. But he does make some mistakes that a beginner would, which cause minor confusions in the timeline of the film. Nevertheless, with good cinematography (Binod Pradhan, "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag"), when almost every major scene had a "framed-picture moment"; the outstanding editing (Namrata Rao, "Kahaani"), that gives the film "flip-book" kind of effect in summary; and especially the spot-on dialogues (Hussain Dalal, "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani") add so much appeal and fun to the film that the balance is restored in favour of the film. Background-scoring (Tubby – Parik) is decent, but almost never emits a deeper effect apart from ending scenes. Music (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy) and lyrics (Amitabh Bhattacharya) are catchy especially "Offo" and "Mast Magan", but are redundant for certain parts. The casting (Nandini Shrikent, "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara") is appropriate. Arjun Kapoor has greatly improved from his debut-film and has made some serious efforts in emoting the character of a Punjabi boy with family problems. However, he is almost never at ease in his expressions which becomes even more evident when he is opposite Alia Bhatt, playing a girl from a convetional Tamilian Brahmin family and his lover, who is a phenomenally expressive and eased-out performer. The supporting cast of Revathy and Shivkumar Subrahmaniyam (playing girl's parents), and Amrita Singh and Ronit Roy (playing the boy's) are nicely conducted and have presences of their own, a rare property. Singh and Revathy are nearly spot-on, whereas, Roy's performance is much similar to his award-winning one in "Udaan" but with positive tones. All in all, an enjoyable experience but the fun could have been manifold had the production was a little less exhaustive. Final verdict: quite watchable!

2 states is fully justify the book.. If you read the book then you will like the movie. Some sequence are missing from the movie because director wants to be it short and simple but it took 2.30 hours. The only difference in movie and the book is the book told the story about the 90's when cellphones are rarely use while the movie is all about 2014. Well i prefer romance without cellphones so i like the book most therefore director made some mistakes while making the movie, you will figure it out if you read the book already, otherwise if you are did not read the book no problem you will also love this movie. 2 States is a happy film (with measured anguish). Romance in cross-cultural or even cross-border situations isn't new to Bollywood. What makes 2 States work is the simple narrative told humorously. Adapted as it is, from one of author Chetan Bhagat's best-selling works, the film, just like the book before it, is light-hearted. Chetan's funny one-liners and life-view are studiously borrowed by the director for his screen outing. And though there is a sense of deja-vu, for those who have read the book, the movie still manages to charm and surprise. Abhishek Verman deserves applause for understanding the usual yet non-described feelings and mindsets of two different castes and narrating it with ease. Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor share a decent chemistry. From my side it is a family entertainer ... 8 out of 10

India is country of diversity. There are so many different cultures. Two persons love each other without thinking of the cultural different. i love this movie because this happens very frequently in India. Acting of Arjun was not impressive but Alia did her best. the location are local but very well directed. i see my own love story in this movie. Alia is going to be the one of the best actress in future. Arjun need to improve himself as an actor. thanks to chetan bhagat for writing such a love story. Amrita did nice.

I am watching this film on 17/04/2014 (in Muscat) a day prior to release date in India. After watching trailer my expectations were high. The dialogues are crisp and some of them pretty deep and well thought. The music and the songs stand apart. But anyway the movie itself had nothing else to offer, nothing new and was quite predictable as to where it was all heading. I'm ashamed that such a movie is still applauded by people when there are movies that get half as much recognition. Arjun Kapoor acting is good. You will love Alia (If you are already fan of her). Still required acting skills. No romance, full drama, full crispy dialogues,

A super lame first half followed up with a rocking second half. One could sum this up in the following ways: 1. There are just certain literature which looks super entertaining while watching but make for very predictable and boring reading. 2. While Indians dish out romantic stories by the dozen the treatment is so shabby that you often wonder how the hell did the chemistry build up. On the other hand, you ask them to show conflicting relative and family issues and they dish out a sucker punch. Here it seemed that the director knew that the first half is just meh and the real strength lies in the second half of the movie. So quick was he to dismiss the chemistry that you could blink and miss it. 3. If there was a direct to movie concept in book writing , Chetan Bhagat should officially consider that instead of going the traditional publisher's way. And last but not the least! 4. Seldom are movies so mainstream and yet celebrate its side actors and character artists so wonderfully. For every effervescent reaction by Alia, Amrita Singh showed why she is such a treat to watch. Ronit Roy turned up and put on all the right moves in reprising his role as the father fighting with his own demons. Revathy and Shivkumar were brilliant as Ananya's parents representing the other side of the spectrum. The struggles of coping with pushy relatives and their own demons at the altars of their sons and daughters done so tastefully and with such restraint. You could almost root for them and hope that they get more and more screen time and that, folks is a rare sight in mainstream Bollywood!

2 States (2014) Review: A cross cultural rom-com which portrays the love to marriage journey of Krish a Punjabi boy and Ananya a Tamilian girl. The prime focus is on the acceptance of cross cultural marriage. The movie is a picturesque of the semi autobiographical novel by Chetan Bhagat. So we all know the plot well before watching the film so don't expect any major twists and turns. It was simple but slow moving because of the pace and long conversations. Arjun Kapoor as Krish has justified his role but it was boring to look at him with his sleep walking style of presence from the start till the end. Alia Bhatt had struggled to fit in the shoes of her role for me as a Tamilian she was not apt for a Tamil girl. I accept she is cute and beautiful but that doesn't help this character. She was good in the last movie Highway and seemed more justifying. She seemed to be pushed into the role and her face, body and expressions where too immature for the role. The cultural dressing she wore in certain scenes where too colourful and artificial. Being a Tamil girl she hardly spoke Tamil in the movie. Interesting sections where the bumping scenes of their parents. Particularly Amrita and Revathi justified their roles and lived up to their culture. Both father roles where over shadowed. The novel was itself little anti Tamil and the movie seemed to zoom up the same anti Tamil factor more. Get in for some cross cultural jokes. This is indeed a happy inter caste or to be right interstate love movie. If you liked reading the novel and wanted to get a better feel of it definitely this movie is less satisfying. Instead you can go and read it once again. But not sure this film might be a blockbuster taking into account that in recent times cross culture movies (Chennai Express) are becoming major hit. Over all 2.25/5. -Reviewed by Sivakumar Balachandran

Director Mr. Abhishek Varman has done apt work. He has completely justified the one of my favorite book ,2 STATES in its cinematic adaption. There are very few shots of fix block. Otherwise most of the scenes are captured with perfect movement. It gives nice feeling while watching. Director of photography Mr. Vinod Pradhan work is impressive. Complete film carries a vibrant look. Dialogues by Hussain Dalal gel completely with the character and at places tickle the funny bones in smart way. Movie is nice but due to based on the famous book, sometimes it slows down, because they had to justify the book also. I wish length of movie should have been little less. Performance wise Arjun Kapoor is very good. Alia Bhatt looks pretty and performed very well. Amrita Singh, Ronit Roy, Revathy, Shivkumar Subramaniam as Ananya's father has performed very nicely. Music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy is OK.
