See You In My 19th Life Review: Shin Hye Sun, and Ahn Bo Hyun lead fantastical romance drama about a reincarnated woman chasing past love from her 18th life
One has often wondered if there truly exists something called ‘a past life’. The curiosity to verify its existence and explore the possibility has driven a lot of research and curious minds to spin tales of the unknown. But what if ‘a past birth’ truly exists and you come to remember all of it? If you’re wondering the same, and are also thinking how it could work out then Shin Hye Sun – Ahn Bo Hyun starrer See You In My 19th Life would serve as a good representation. This romance-fantasy drama began airing on June 17, 2023, and promises to take the viewers on a comical ride every weekend.
See You In My 19th Life Review: Shin Hye Sun, and Ahn Bo Hyun lead fantastical romance drama about a reincarnated woman chasing past love from her 18th life
Shin Hye Sun is undoubtedly one of the most promising actors. She has made her mark in the industry with her impeccable comic timing, her expressive acting, and her great dialogue delivery. In the past few years, she has repeatedly taken to fantasy dramas across genres like a ballerina with past trauma in Angel’s Last Mission: Love, an aspiring violinist in Still 17, or a sassy Joseon-era queen in Mr. Queen. She adds one more title on the shelf with See You In My 19th Life where she plays the role of Ban Ji Eum, a woman in her early 20s who remembers all her previous eighteen lives. “Normally, I start to remember my past lives between the ages of 8 and 12,” one hears Shin Hye Sun’s voice-over towards the beginning of the episode. In her current and 19th life, she is on a quest to reunite with the boy Seo Ha from her previous life. Her childhood was difficult and she had to fend for herself with her abilities. But she was determined to make it big in the world. Her sole motivation was finding Seo Ha in her current life and she succeeds too.
In her eighteenth life, Ban Ji Eum spends her time with a young Seo Ha and both grow attached. One day when they were traveling in a car, they landed in an accident that took her life and left Seo Ha with a hearing impairment and trauma. In her current life, Ji Eum is very quirky and eccentric. She remembers her past lives and works her way in society using the skills she has accrued all these years.
Ahn Bo Hyun, whom we have largely seen in crime action dramas like My Name and Military Prosecutor Doberman, turns to the fantasy genre with See You In My 19th Life. He portrays the role of grown-up Seo Ha who has his share of problems to deal with. He lost his mother at a young age, his father and he doesn’t see eye to eye, and more so, his mother’s hotel is struggling to keep up to its past glory. Ji Eum’s entry into Seo Ha’s life is a good comic relief and a distraction away from his problems.
The first two episodes of the drama jump right into the story with an introduction of the primary and secondary cast and their stories are set in place. Our leads have their backstories set which justifies their current behavior and course of action in the present. Shin Hye Sun’s sunshine personality against Ahn Bo Hyun’s grumpy one is a good combination to see on screen. On one hand, we have Ban Ji Eum who wears her heart on her sleeve, and on the other hand, we have Seo Ha who deals with his own problems and barely shows any emotions.
The drama is also portrayed in vibrant frames which accentuate the comic storyline in the story. With just over an hour of runtime, there are several angles in work throughout the episode. Each character is introduced and dealt with in their own sweet time frame as required by the story. The story gives a good balance of entertainment and serious thinking. There is enough told and untold to keep the audience hooked to the story. There are a lot of flashbacks, owing to Ji Eum remembering her past lives, which add to the run time of the show. The ‘past life’ angle certainly adds more to the story. Reincarnation has been a topic used a lot in fantasy and romance dramas, but remembering every past in each life is certainly interesting to see.
In Ji Eum’s previous life, she was older than Seo Ha but in her current life, she is younger than him. Towards the end of the second episode, we see that Seo Ha remembers Ji Eum as the little girl who nursed his wound and asked him to marry her. It remains to be seen how he would react once he finds out that Ji Eum and he shares a connection. How Ji Eum remembers her past lives is also a mystery still. Did she cross paths with a sorcerer who gave her the ability? Will she go on a mission to unravel the mystery herself?
See You In My 19th Life is a delightful fantasy romance drama. However, may raise a few eyebrows. Knowing that she has had past lives, the first time she meets Seo Ha in her current life, which is her 19th life, child actress Park So Yi plays Ban Ji Eum’s role when she meets a high school going student though, in her 18th life, she is 12 whereas Seo Ha is 10. If you are looking to spend your weekend indulging in something that takes your mind off of things, then you can give this Shin Hye Sun starrer a chance. What would you do if you remembered your past lives too?
