James Gunn confirms Superman: Legacy title changed to Superman on first day of shoot, see photo
In March 2023, news surfaced of James Gunn directing a new Superman film. By April, Superman: Legacy began pre-production. June saw the cast announcement, revealing David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Superman and Lois Lane, with Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Fast forward to February 22, 2024, and Gunn shared the first cast photo, hinting at the film's progress. Now, the filmmaker has revealed that there has been a title change on the first day of the shoot and the film will be simply called Superman.
“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday,” Gunn wrote in a caption along with a photo which gives a glimpse of the costume.
“When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film ‘Superman: Legacy.’ By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN,” he added. “Making our way to you July 2025.”
David Corenswet, known from Ryan Murphy's Hollywood, steps into the superhero shoes alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane in James Gunn's upcoming project. Nicholas Hoult will embody the role of the cunning Lex Luthor, while the ensemble includes Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. Nathan Fillon joins as Guy Gardner, with Isabela Mercad portraying Hawkgirl.
Superman marks the beginning of a new era in the DCU, with Gunn and Peter Safran leading the charge in creating a cohesive universe of interconnected films and TV shows. The new entry is slated for release on July 11, 2025.
