Ben Affleck reveals why he returned for The Accountant 2: “The fans brought me back”

Ben Affleck, known for his selective approach to sequels, recently shared insights into why he decided to return for a follow-up to one of his most beloved films, The Accountant. In an interview, he reflected on the enduring impact of the original movie and how audience enthusiasm played a crucial role in his decision.

“This is a movie where after the first one, and it was successful, I was really proud of it. But it had a longer life in terms of real-life feedback that I get from people,” Affleck explained. He noted that over the years, fans frequently mentioned the film to him, making him realize that it continued to resonate with audiences.

 

The rise of streaming platforms also contributed to the movie’s lasting popularity. “I think it's also a function of the fact that streaming really started to take off after this movie, so people had the opportunity to pick what movie they're going to watch,” he said.

 

However, Affleck emphasized that he wouldn’t have returned just for the sake of making another movie. He and co-star Gavin were deeply invested in the character’s journey and saw an opportunity to expand on it meaningfully. “We both were drawn to the idea of bringing John back and expanding on that because we both really were like, ‘This guy's fabulous,’ and we love it,” he shared.

 

The sequel didn’t come together overnight. Affleck credited Bill and Gavin for their meticulous and patient approach in developing the next chapter, ensuring it was not just a rehash of the first. “They really brought me back. Bill and Gavin spent a lot of time in the intervening years developing and putting together, in a meticulous, patient, detail-oriented, character-driven way, what it could be,” he said.

 

With careful planning and a strong creative vision, Affleck found the project compelling enough to revisit the character and deliver a sequel that would live up to the audience expectations.
