“No one claimed it’s original”: Sujoy Ghosh REACTS to music criticism in Dhurandhar trailer
The trailer of Dhurandhar, starring Ranveer Singh, has taken over social media—partly for its scale, and partly for a new controversy around the music. While the film’s first look earned excitement, a section of the internet was quick to point out that the trailer ends with a recreated version of Madhubala’s iconic qawwali ‘Na Toh Karvan Ki Talaash Hai’ from Barsaat Ki Raat.
But amid the online criticism, filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh has stepped in to defend the team.
What sparked the debate
Sujoy Ghosh first shared his appreciation for the trailer on X. Praising the cast and the music, he wrote: “That Dhurandhar trailer is toooo good… And that song at the end of the trailer? ekdum kickum assum.”
That’s when a user replied saying the track was not original and Bollywood “has zero originality left” when it comes to music.
Sujoy’s response: “No one claimed it’s original”
Ghosh shut down the criticism by pointing out that the makers never claimed the song was new. “No one claimed it’s original. In fact, if anything… it's good that they got a song from Barsaat Ki Raat out there,”he wrote.
The user later clarified that they appreciated the nostalgia but felt Bollywood relies too heavily on old classics instead of creating new music. Sujoy didn’t escalate the debate but kept his stance firm—recreations are valid as long as they’re acknowledged.
Directed by Aditya Dhar, the big-scale action drama features a star-studded cast—Ranveer Singh, R Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Sara Arjun, and Rakesh Bedi.
The story follows a high-stakes mission involving an undercover agent, and the trailer suggests an intense, gritty world with heavy emotional stakes.
The film is produced by Aditya Dhar, Jyoti Deshpande, and Lokesh Dhar. It is slated to release on December 5.
