Karan Johar says Dhurandhar “blew me away”; confesses Ranveer Singh starrer made him rethink his craft

Filmmaker Karan Johar has added his voice to the chorus of industry praise for the Ranveer Singh-led espionage thriller Dhurandhar — and his remarks have grabbed attention online after being captured in a video from a recent public event. Johar’s heartfelt comments about the film came at the book launch of Dining With Stars by noted critic Anupama Chopra, where he spoke candidly about his experience of watching Aditya Dhar’s blockbuster.

In a clip circulating on social media, Johar described Dhurandhar in glowing terms, emphasising how much the film impacted him on both a creative and emotional level. “I was like, blown away by Dhurandhar,” he said, before elaborating on what stood out to him in the film’s craft and storytelling. “It makes you feel like, ‘Oh my craft is limited compared to this.’ Oh my god, look at the use of background music.”

 

Johar credited director Aditya Dhar for the film’s seamless narrative style and restraint, highlighting that Dhurandhar does not come across as self-conscious in its storytelling. “What I loved about Dhurandhar was that I didn’t feel that the director was self-aware,” he said. “I felt like he wasn’t trying to show off his craft, and yet he was seamlessly like telling you the story.”

 

The veteran filmmaker went on to reflect on how the experience made him reassess his own creative approach. “It made me question my ability as a filmmaker, and that’s always a good thing for me,” Johar said, viewing the reaction as positive fuel for his future work. He also shared a personal note about his cinematic journey for the year, saying, “So I began the year loving Saiyaara and ended the year loving Dhurandhar. I loved Lokah.”

 

Johar’s remarks come amid widespread acclaim and discussion around Dhurandhar since its December 5, 2025 release. The spy thriller — starring Ranveer Singh as an Indian agent and featuring Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan and Arjun Rampal — has become one of the highest-earning Indian films of the year while drawing both praise and debate for its narrative and themes.

 

His comments also followed earlier public reactions from other industry figures; for instance, fellow actor Akshay Kumar shared on social media how Dhurandhar moved him, writing he was “blown away” and praising the way the story was told.
