Farhan Akhtar on keeping daughters out of spotlight; says, “Attention is something that they need to earn”

Farhan Akhtar, who was previously married to hairstylist Adhuna Bhabani, has always maintained a grounded approach when it comes to parenting his daughters, Shakya Akhtar and Akira Akhtar. Even though Farhan and Adhuna separated in 2016 after 16 years of marriage, the former couple continues to co-parent their children, ensuring they grow up with stability and support from both parents.

In a recent interaction, the actor-filmmaker opened up about why he keeps his daughters away from the public spotlight despite belonging to one of the most influential families in the film and literary world. He revealed that his daughters are charting their own paths with confidence and independence. Speaking to Mid-Day, Farhan said, “They are happy girls, growing independently. We are not telling them what they should do. They will find their own feet, they are very confident, independent, beautiful girls.”

 

Farhan also reflected on his family legacy  being the 8th-generation poet on his father Javed Akhtar’s side and the responsibility that comes with raising children who are constantly surrounded by fame and public attention. He shared that he believes recognition should be earned, not inherited, which is why he consciously shields his daughters from the limelight. He explained, “My intention has always been to keep them away from the spotlight. Attention is something that they need to earn. They should not take it for granted because of who you are. I want them to be more successful than I could imagine, and if they want to be publicly famous, I wish well for them, but it would be nice that they earn that and not get used to being someone’s daughter or related to so and so person. I keep them away from this because I think they need to work towards that.”
