EXCLUSIVE: Sunny Singh on Manoj Kumar, "He used to personally visit and help people"

Sunny Singh, whose latest movie The Bhootnii is set to hit theatres on April 18, 2025, recently appeared in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama on the Lights, Camera, Podcast with Rohit Khilnani.

The actor fondly recalled the stories his father shared about legendary actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, who recently passed away. Manoj Kumar, known as Bharat Kumar for his patriotic films, left an indelible mark on Indian cinema, not just through his iconic roles, but also through his humility and kindness on set.

 

Sunny, whose father was a fighter and later an action director, shared heartwarming memories passed down to him. “My father always said, ‘There are many stars, but Manoj sir was the one who would sit with all of us and eat.’” He added, “Even when I was just a year old, and my father had bought a house, Manoj sir was there at our place. He used to personally visit and help people.”

 

Reflecting on the era of Manoj Kumar, Sunny noted the incredible work ethic of the time. “They didn’t even sleep! Kranti was shot for so many days, not 30, not 60, way more than that.” He believes the current generation has much to learn from these veterans. “Back then, it was like you were a horse with blinders, just focused on your goal, your hard work.”

 

Talking about his early years, he mentioned that growing up on film sets and seeing stars like Ajay Devgn perform thrilling stunts, he had always dreamed of making it to the big screen.“I started giving auditions at 17 or 18,” he shared. Though television gave him initial recognition, Sunny was clear that his passion lay in cinema. “TV taught me camera work and gave me confidence, but my heart was always in films,” he admitted.
