EXCLUSIVE: "Gangubai Kathiawadi comes from a very personal place in his heart" - Alia Bhatt on Sanjay Leela Bhansali

After many years of work and almost a year of shoot amid the pandemic, Alia Bhatt is set to bring Gangubai Kathiawadi on the big screen with Sanjay Leela Bhansali helming the project. This marks the first collaboration between the filmmaker and the actress and the hype around it is quite massive. In a recent conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Alia Bhatt spoke at length about her film and working with the ace filmmaker who recently completed 25 years in the industry.

Talking about the humour quotient in the trailer and how the project is deeply personal to Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Alia Bhatt said that the filmmaker was quite nostalgic during the process of the filming. "Even when we were shooting, he used to talk about how nostalgic he is feeling and how this comes from a very personal place in his heart. This world, this universe, what he's seen, the visuals, some of the dialogues, very personal space it's come from, but that comes across. Even the humor of the character I feel it is Sir's humor. He is funny. The one-liners he has given are next level," she said.

 

In the same conversation, when told that she has sort of become the 'perfectionist' in many ways, seeing her career graph and kind of performances she has been delivering, Alia Bhatt cited that she ain't perfect. "I'll be sitting in one spot for 10 days if the director asked me to sit over there and do it. But that's hard-working that doesn't mean that perfection is something that I'm striving for. I'm striving for authenticity. At the best of my capabilities, I want to deliver and that's it. Beyond that, I can't create something which doesn't exist," she said.

 

Gangubai Kathiawadi has also been selected to be screened at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival in February and will have its world premiere at the festival, to be screened as part of Berlinale Special, a segment of the film festival which is dedicated to showcasing exemplary cinema.

 

Viacom18 Studios & Paramount Pictures International will be distributing Gangubai Kathiawadi in all International markets outside of India. Produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Dr. Jayantilal Gada (Pen Studios), the film is all set to release theatrically on 25th February 2022.
