Daisy Shah calls out objectification in Kannada films; says, “A fruit salad or a vegetable salad was being made on the heroine’s navel”

Actress Daisy Shah, who has worked in both Bollywood and Sandalwood, recently spoke candidly about what she described as the Kannada film industry's unusual fixation on female actors’ navels. In an interview with Hauterrfly, Shah criticized the lack of depth in direction for women, noting that male actors often received more nuanced guidance.

She recalled, “When I was doing a Kannada film, during my off days I watched TV, and in all the Kannada songs I saw… there was a particular actor, and in all his songs, either a fruit salad or a vegetable salad was being made on the heroine’s navel with close-up shots. Sometimes ice or water was being poured on the navel too.”

 

Shah contrasted the superficial treatment of female roles with the richer direction afforded to male counterparts, suggesting the disparity stemmed partly from her limited fluency in Kannada.

 

Her reflection has ignited discussion across social media, drawing parallels to earlier observations by actress Malavika Mohanan about South Indian cinema’s celebrated or controversial, “navel obsession.” Some netizens even speculated that Shah’s remarks were indirectly alluding to veteran actor-filmmaker V. Ravichandran, known for similarly stylized song sequences featuring women’s midriffs.

 

Beginning her journey as a background dancer under Ganesh Acharya, Daisy later transitioned to acting with lead roles in Kannada films such as Bhadra and Bodyguard. She later gained wider recognition through her Bollywood debut in Jai Ho opposite Salman Khan (2014). Her filmography also includes Hate Story 3 (2015), along with appearances on reality TV. Most recently, she featured in the web series Red Room, which also featured Amit Gaur, Anuj Sachdeva, Reena Aggarwal and Reeva Chaudhary in key roles.
