Boman Irani on his directorial debut 'The Mehta boys': "We're all guilty of backseat driving as parents"
Boman Irani, known for his stellar performances on screen, is now stepping behind the camera with his directorial debut, The Mehta Boys. The film, set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video this week, revolves around a strained father-son relationship and how they are forced to spend time together under unusual circumstances.
Boman Irani on his directorial debut 'The Mehta boys': "We're all guilty of backseat driving as parents"
Boman Irani on film’s premise
Speaking about the film's premise, Irani shared, "It's an easier film to connect for the audience because it is so much more relatable. They'll feel, 'that's my dad, that's my uncle. That is how my brother and dad behave.'"
Personal connection of father-son
Despite never having met his father, who passed away when he was just six months old, Irani found himself drawn to the father-son dynamic in The Mehta Boys. He mused, "I never met my father. Maybe I am feeling a void somewhere. I don't know. I am not even trying to make it sound psychological. I got drawn to the story, and if you got drawn to it, then the reasons are the same."
Boman Irani on Storytelling
When asked what makes the film personal to him, Irani cleverly responded, "Even if David Fincher is making a Seven and he has never been a part of a serial killer's life, it still has to be personal." He emphasized how the film's relatability adds to its emotional depth. "The relatability is so evident; it actually becomes easy to make it consumable for audiences with a heart," he explained.
Building authenticity
Irani also revealed that he drew inspiration from real-life father-son relationships, even if not directly from his own. "I did a hell of a lot of interviews. I can't reveal names. We are all guilty of backseat driving, and I have drawn from a lot of personal experiences."
From photographer to director at 65
The actor-turned-director, who has continually broken conventional timelines in his career, started as a photographer in his 30s, became an actor at 43, and is now making his directorial debut at 65. With The Mehta Boys, he is set to bring an emotionally resonant and heartfelt story to the audience, proving once again that it’s never too late to follow one's passion.
