Does Akshay Kumar-starrer OMG 2 deserve a National Award? Trade experts share their views

By Fenil Seta -

A lot was expected from Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2, the latest blockbuster. But what has turned out to be a pleasant surprise is the box office performance of OMG 2, starring Akshay Kumar, Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam. The film faced several challenges like opposition from Gadar 2, ‘A’ certificate etc. Yet, it opened at Rs. 10.26 crores. The collections improved with each passing day, and the film entered the Rs. 100 crore club in the second weekend. This has been possible due to an extremely positive word of mouth. Viewers have loved the message of the film and it has already become a talking point.

Does Akshay Kumar-starrer OMG 2 deserve a National Award? Trade experts share their views

We asked trade experts if OMG 2 deserved a National Award. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh whole-heartedly agreed, “It deserves not just National Award but all awards. It has raised an important point without sounding serious. Bahut hi haste haste baat kahi hai. It keeps you smiling. As they say, if you sugar coat a bitter pill, aadmi usse gale se utaar leta hai!”

Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, said, “I haven’t seen the film. But if it’s given a good social message, then why not? It should definitely get National Award”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan remarked, “The sequel is nice but not as great as the first part (OMG Oh My God; 2012). So, I really doubt (if it deserves National Award).” He also made comparisons with recent films that talked about sex and its related aspects in recent times, “If OMG 2 deserves a National Award, then so does Janhit Mein Jaari (2022) and Chhatriwali (2023).”

Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise in Jaipur, minced no words as he said, “Why should it get a National Award? There are a dozen films that are socially relevant. That doesn’t mean they should all get a National Award.”

Trade experts, nevertheless, are happy with the film’s numbers. Taran Adarsh stated, “The manner in which its collections went up is purely because of word of mouth.” He also had a grouse, “It’s a very good film. I wonder why it got an ‘A’ certificate. Jiske liye picture bani haiagar wohi nahin dekh paa rahe hai, toh kaise chalega? Tomorrow, when the film will be out on OTT, won’t the under-18 crowd watch the film? Sex education is very important for today’s youth. We need to enlighten them. And the film doesn’t hurt sentiments at all.”

He continued, “It’s very important to teach kids about ‘good touch bad touch’ in today’s day and age. Kids sometimes don’t even realize that they are being violated.”

Taran also said that he was confident that the film will sail through despite the adults-only rating, “I told Akshay Kumar, ‘Kabir Singh (2019) had ‘A’ certificate and the same goes for The Kashmir Files (2022) and The Kerala Story (2023). An adult certificate is no deterrent’. If the film is good, people are going to come in. I told the producer Akshay’s famous dialogue in the film, ‘Rakh vishwaas’!”

Girish Johar, meanwhile, opined, “Akshay Kumar is a fine actor and it’s good that he has bounced back.”

Taran Adarsh agreed, “Look at Akshay Kumar. Pad Man (2018) bhi banayi, Toilet - Ek Prem Katha (2017) bhi banayi aur ab sex education pe bhi film banayi. He deserves kudos for trying to give something different to the audience. OMG 2 brings him back with a bang. What a fine performance by him!”
