17 Years of Waqt EXCLUSIVE: "For the dog chase sequence, we tied meat on Akshay Kumar’s back; one dog almost took Akshay’s eye off" - Vipul Shah

The father-son saga, Waqt – The Race Against Time, completed 17 years on April 22. While the film is remembered for its plot, music, message and performances, one of the most memorable sequences in the film and probably also of Bollywood is when Akshay Kumar is chased by a pack of wild dogs.

The said scene comes at a crucial juncture when Akshay Kumar’s character Aditya is chided by his father Ishwarchandra, played by Amitabh Bachchan. Aditya is desperate to earn money to feed his pregnant wife, Pooja, played by Priyanka Chopra. With no other option, he lands on a film set and takes up the difficult job of a stunt double. His task is to be chased by the wild dogs. Though he’s being told that the job is risky, Aditya goes ahead. It turned out to be a nail-biting scene for the viewers.

 

Bollywood Hungama recently spoke to director-producer Vipul Shah on the 17th anniversary of Waqt – The Race Against Time. When asked about this scene, he narrated, “In Mumbai, we could not find enough trained dogs. While filming, out of 12 dogs, 5-6 of them would wander here and there. As a result, we called for 20-25 dogs hoping at least 12 of them would run and perform as per our wishes. That didn’t work either.”

 

Vipul Shah continued, “We then tied meat on Akshay Kumar’s back so that the dogs would chase the food. It was risky, though. At the end of every shot, we’d keep a platform and Akshay would jump on it after the shot was cut so that the dogs won’t hurt him.”

 

Vipul then revealed that Akshay Kumar had a close shave, “For the last bit of the scene in the water, Akshay had no control over anything. In the last shot of that scene in the water, one dog almost took Akshay’s eye off. The dog was in the water and he didn’t know. He simply moved his paw. Thankfully, Akshay has excellent reflexes. So, he turned his face. He got a scratch mark on his face, just below the eye. Had he moved his face by a fraction of a second, he would have got his eye injured.”
