FICCI FRAMES Diary Day 3 - Hugh Jackman,SRK,Ash attend frames

Though there were a few interesting sessions lined up, it all felt like a lead up for the glamorous evening ahead. Here are a few highlights of day 3 at FICCI FRAMES.

 

Successful film content for the future: Rise of the debutants - Nobody would deny that 2010 saw a string of successful films directed by debutants and starring new faces. Karan Johar's hand picked panel featured names like - Abhishek Sharma (Tere Bin Laden), Kiran Rao (Dhobi Ghat), Ranveer Singh (Band Baaja Baaraat), Sonakshi Sinha (Dabangg), Habib Faisal (Do Dooni Chaar), Vikramaditya Motwane (Udaan) and Maneesh Sharma (Band Baaja Baaraat). The key issue discussed was how each of these filmmakers challenged the industry conventions and formulas by telling a story that was personal and engaging. Their films were 'concept films', termed by Abhishek Sharma and the panel unanimously agreed that concepts are bigger than stars and budgets. Their success in the industry has not only given hope to many others, but has challenged many industry stereotypes. Amongst other topics under discussion were - their journey from strugglers till making their film, the road blocks they faced and the way ahead.

The changing face of Indian journalism - This keynote delivered by Shekhar Gupta, Editor in Chief, The Indian Express was by far one of the most illuminating talks delivered at FICCI Frames this year. Truthful, fearless, insightful and progressive are some of the words that could be used to describe his speech. He discussed how the power of the Fourth Estate has grown over the years thanks to the technological advancements. News and awareness can be spread out in no time - hence keeping a check on our society and those in power. Today with mobile phones with cameras, responsible citizens of this country too can be sources of news and information. Another issue he brought to light was of - Credibility, which is the prime factor that defines good journalism.

 

Lobbying for change: The role of trade bodies - The session was informative about the various functions of trade bodies and associations in the Indian film business. There were a lot of examples quoted where these bodies were instrumental in settling disputes and eliminating unfair trade practices.

 

Video games for kids - This session brought two developers from Ubisoft Pune, Jithin Rao and Jitesh Panchal and they took the attendees through the process of developing games from a mere idea and brief to the end product. They focussed on developing a game around a 'persona', which in simpler words is a person that represents their target audience. A 'persona' helps the developer understand whom the game is to be made for and what are the expectations it must fulfil to be enjoyed and consumed. Other issues discussed were how to convey instructions visually to kids and adjusting the levels of difficulty.

 

Cinema and the digital consumer - With the growing number of new platforms for digital content consumption, lies a potential for distributing content especially for the digital consumer. The panellists were believers that internet is going to be instrumental in delivering content to a wider audience base and will help monetize content that may not necessarily gain theatrical releases or marketing/promotion support.

 

Valedictory - UTV Chief Ronnie Screwvala summarised the three days of FICCI effectively in his brief speech emphasizing on the need for the industry to grow from strength to strength. He didn't shy away from sharing numbers that pointed that the Indian entertainment industry has not shown the kind of growth it should have. If one is to consider that India is a booming media industry worldwide then the growth percentage has to be much higher.

 

Next on stage were Karan Johar, Shah Rukh Khan and the star attraction of the evening - Hugh Jackman. This entertaining sight lead to another - The FICCI Excellence Awards and the promise to return next year bigger and stronger.

10. Best Actress - Vidya Balan (Ishqiya)

 

11. Best Music - Dabangg

 

12. Best Debut Actor - Ranveer Singh for Band Baaja Baaraat

 

13. Best Debut Actress - Sonakshi Sinha for Dabangg

 

14. Best Debut Director - Maneesh Sharma for Band Baaja Baaraat
