“It just can’t get bigger than Kamal sir. He is like the ultimate,” says celebrity stylist Amritha Ram who has been closely working with legendary star Kamal Haasan. She has been curating looks for him as he hosts Bigg Boss Tamil.
Though Amritha Ram works with many celebrities, she thoroughly enjoys the process of working with Kamal Haasan since he has a lot of knowledge about what goes into curating looks. “When I got to work with him for Bigg Boss Tamil, initially, the first few interactions – I am not a person who gets stressed at all. I breeze through everything. I just take it as it comes and I don’t hold back anything that doesn’t work for me. When you work with Kamal sir, everything changes. Everything turns topsy-turvy. You know it was like ‘Amritha, collect yourself. Yes, you can do this. Deep breathe, calm down’. These were all bunch of things. It was great because sir is like a master of everything. He knows everything from fabric to cut to stitch to accessory to colour to contrasts – everything he knows. So, you need to be really well prepared to address it to sir. I understood it in the first couple of meetings since he gave me some very good costume hacks, colour and shoe hacks. He is a person who just seeks excellence in everything,” she reveals exclusively to Bollywood Hungama.
Amritha Ram further states that working with Kamal Haasan has been a game-changing experience for her. “When I work, I approach these ideas and approach them in a certain pattern only. With sir, he knows everything and if I tell him about layering – he has done every single thing and how he has done it in a way which sets trends. I am always in awe of him. You just need to be well researched so you can address it in a way the way you are expected to go. Then, you get a lot of lessons from sir. So, every time you talk about a certain colour, fabric or cut, it is so much of learning from sir. This is the best that could happen and I am so glad and honoured and proud that I am working with sir,” she further adds.
When asked what is the process like when it comes to working with someone as a legendary as Kamal Haasan who has been a trendsetter for generations. “Well, the discussions would be first of all what the mood is,” she reveals. “He clearly said that ‘I need to be Kamal Haasan and I don’t need to be any other characters’. Last time, we tried creating a couple of looks and give it an own twist just to make it adaptable to stage. First of all, the mood is very clear and it is set by sir and then we see the colour palette, the textures, the layering, and the accessories. It’s a very beautiful process.”
Amritha also cites that Kamal Haasan has a collection of everything that one would want to raid his closet. “Sir has got a humongous collection of shoes. Except for some time when I try to procure something very new, we can’t get something that is better than what sir has it in his wardrobe; he will go and check out his wardrobe. It is a collection to die for. If someone asked me which celebrity closet would you like to raid? I would say sir’s because each one is collector’s item – some of the rarest watches, collected over the period of his travel,” she says. “When we pick a watch or something, in between, sir will share some anecdotes from his films. If we are talking about high waist pants or length of the pants or texture or colours, sometimes it happens a lot though I don’t want to see it has most of the time but it happens a lot. You get to hear such anecdotes from an actor like what hasn’t he done.”
Speaking of this journey on working with Kamal Haasan on Bigg Boss Tamil, she adds, “This entire journey of travelling with him as a stylist is so rewarding in terms of work and what I get to learn. How has he done looks in those days when it just been between the director and him as in those days there weren’t many costume designer jobs. It was mainly between the director and the actor. This is why started a page on Instagram to document the style of Kamal Haasan sir. Hearing these anecdotes and hearing about how he set up all these looks at a time when there was no internet, no referencing, no assigned designers except for costume dadas – there was nothing very specific. But in those days he set up such amazing looks and trends. I started compiling and asked him ‘Sir, can I start a page?’ Once I started posting, so many people called and said ‘Ma’am, this was so helpful’. Working with him is a journey which I am taking it by the day.”
