Legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam passed away in 2020 following coronavirus complications. He has been now honoured with Padma Vibhushan posthumously. The announcement was made on January 25, 2021. Ten years after he received Padma Bhushan, the government announced him as one of the award recipients on Monday.

Padma Awards - one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.

SP Balasubrahmanyam was given a 24-gun salute by the Tamil Nadu Police and was laid to rest at his farmhouse in September 2020.

SP Balasubrahmanyam worked on over 40, 000 songs in 16 languages. He extensively worked with well-known musicians and even won six National Awards. He was also honoured with Padma Shri in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2011.
