The shooting of Malayalam superstar Mammootty's forthcoming film Puzhu began on Tuesday. The film was released on the auspicious first day of the chingam month, according to the Malayalam calendar. Mammootty attended the traditional pooja, after which he turned on the camera, signalling the start of the shoot.

For the first time, Mammootty and Parvathy will share screen time in Puzhu, which is produced by Dulquer Salmaan's Wayfarer Films.
Ratheena, who worked as an executive producer on the film Uyare, in which Parvathy starred as an acid attack survivor, makes her directorial debut with Puzhu. Harshad, who also scripted Mammootty's critically, praised film Unda, and Suhas-Sharfu, a screenwriting duo, collaborated on the film (Virus, Varathan).
The project includes cinematographer Theni Eswar, music composer Jakes Bejoy (Ranam), and editor Deepu Joseph (Jallikattu).
In 2017, Parvathy and Mammootty were in the centre of a heated controversy about sexism in Malayalam cinema. After criticising Mammootty's character's blatant misogyny in Kasaba, Parvathy received a lot of backlash on social media. In the meantime, Parvathy has appeared alongside Dulquer in hit films such as Bangalore Days and Charlie.
