Karthi opens up about how people in North found ‘PS 1’ difficult to understand; says, “They will be able to better understand the film when the second part comes”

Karthi opened up about why audiences in North India were able to understand the film better post OTT release.

Among the several Pan India films that won hearts in 2022, was also the ambitious project of Mani Ratnam, Ponniyin Selvan (Part 1) based on the novel by the same name. The historical drama set against the backdrop of Chola Empire enjoyed a massive cast including the likes of Chiyaan Vikram, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, among others and released in multiple languages. Recently, during the media interactions of PS 2 (Part 2) of the film, Karthi opened up about the response they received for PS 1 across the country.

According to Karthi, the film, although did win good reviews overall and also fared well in several territories apart from South and even internationally, he felt that a lot of people, especially in the Northern belt of India, found it challenging to understand. Despite the fact, that the film did release in Hindi and other languages, they were unable to understand names and factors like that which are specific and unique to South India. “In Kerala and Karnataka the film was well-received. In the South, due to the relatability factor, the film worked well,” revealed Karthi during a recent media interaction for PS 2.

He went on to add, “I think they (North) found it a bit difficult to understand. That’s what I felt initially. When you are reading a novel, you will forget the names by the time you get to the tenth page. Similarly, here too they had that problem. However, when the film was released on OTT, they were able to get it. So, they will be able to better understand the film when the second part comes.” He also asserted further, “After the OTT release, even many from North are awaiting the release of the second part.”

Ponniyin Selvan is a historical drama based on kingdom politics and is based on the novel written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. While PS 1 released on September 30 2022, PS 2 will be releasing on April 28 2023.
