In the aftermath to an earthquake, the brief was to make the mall look disrupted and badly shaken. The original mall is only a storey high; this was recreated in CGi using 2.5D and 3D dynamics. The debris and dust were all augmented through visual effects.
The director and the cinematographer wanted the fort surrounded by water to be visually appealing. To recreate the fort, detailed matte paintings were made along with moss to give it an old rustic look. The water sunlight, sky and sun flare were added as well to seamlessly match the shots.
The entire earthquake sequence was made in CG, the cracks, falling debris, etc. The wrecked bridge that Govind leaps off was also made possible through visual effects.
Prime Focus, one of India's largest post-production studios has executed the visual effects for UTV Motion Picture's, Kai Po Che! The film is an adaptation from Chetan Bhagat's book, The 3 Mistakes of My Life. Prime Focus delivered 400 shots in a startling month's time, which was made possible by 80 artists across their Mumbai and Hyderabad based facilities. Although the film released over a month ago, we were provided these 'in-progress' visual effects images only recently. Manning a force of 80 artists, senior VFX supervisor, Reupal Rawal said that they were given the freedom to conceive, design and build some extraordinary visual effects sequences for the film.
