If you have watched Rian Johnson’s recent murder-mystery outing Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story, you’d know that Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc is friends has some legendary players in his gaming circle! The film debuted on December 23 on Netflix and managed to make way to the streaming giant’s Top 10 list, scoring the sixth rank. The film, which is doing quite decently, surprised fans with cameo appearances of some legendary actors.

Two now-late legends Stephen Sondheim and Angela Lansbury make cameo appearance as members of detective Blanc's virtual gaming group. The scene finds detective Blanc playing the game of ‘Among Us’ in the bathtub with Sondheim and Lansbury present over video chat, but how did Rian manage to nab such notable cameos?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, serving as tributes to two of Johnson’s favorite artists, the cameos were filmed during the movie’s editing process and are featured alongside cameos from Natasha Lyonne and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Johnson said he filmed Lansbury’s cameo at her L.A. home, adding that she was perfect for the scene and “couldn’t have been lovelier and more generous.”

He further revealed that the actress didn’t quite understand the game much and recalled that "[s]he was very patient in letting me describe the rules of Among Us, up to a point. At which point she just said, ‘You know what? Just tell me what the lines are. I’ll trust you.'" He noted that the legend was apparently "not a gamer."

Speaking of Sondheim's inclusion, he was recorded via Zoom call. Johnson and his producing partner Ram Bergman were “working every connection they had,” to reach him, the report notes. “I wasn’t really sure how to get to him. But then I was on a call with Bryan Lourd, our agent, and it somehow came up,” Bergman recalled.

“I said, ‘We really would love Stephen to do this.’ And I swear, five minutes later, he emailed me: He’s going to do it. Rian was in heaven, and I was in heaven because I knew how much he meant for Rian,” Bergman added. Lansbury died in October at the age of 96 while Sondheim took his last breath in December 2021 aged 91.

“One thing I’ve learned is that every moment you get with somebody that you respect, savor that time and put yourself in that situation as often as possible,” Johnson added.
