Christopher Nolan's Interstellar (2014) completed 10 years and on this occasion, the film was re-released on December 6 this year in select IMAX theatres. The decision to re-release the film in the gigantic IMAX theatres led to a lot of jubilation among fans worldwide and Indian fans were no exception. However, they were disappointed that Interstellar didn’t get a day-and-date re-release in India as the West due to the release of Pushpa 2 – The Rule. The Allu Arjun starrer also got a release in the IMAX screens, and it was released on December 5; due to the hype, it took up all the IMAX screens. Soon, it was speculated that the re-release of Interstellar has been cancelled in India, making fans furious. Janhvi Kapoor’s comment on a post comparing Interstellar and Pushpa 2 – The Rule got its share of admirers and critics, and it kept this controversy in the limelight.
Bollywood Hungama has learned that Interstellar will indeed be re-releasing in India. A source told us, “Contrary to what has been reported, the studio, Warner Bros, definitely plans to release Interstellar in India. It is a widely accepted fact that Nolan enjoys a lot of popularity in our country, and it has increased with each passing film. His last film Oppenheimer (2023) was a Rs. 100 crores grosser, out of which it collected nearly Rs. 50 crores in the IMAX screens. Hence, why would anyone let go of the opportunity to re-release Interstellar, especially when it’s happening in many other parts of the world?”
The source continued, “Sadly, it couldn’t be released on December 6 as Pushpa 2 – The Rule was to arrive in the same week and there’s a huge demand to see the sequel in IMAX and normal 2D formats. IMAX is also very clear about not having two big IMAX films in the same week. Besides, Warner Bros is not in favour of having just one show daily for Interstellar; it wants to provide a sufficient number of screenings throughout the day.”
The question that arises is – when will Interstellar re-release in India? The source replied, “Not this year. Mufasa: The Lion King will take up the IMAX screens from December 20. Some significant new releases are also lined up in the coming weeks. Hence, Warner Bros has decided to re-release Interstellar in the first quarter of 2025. As soon as they come across any vacant week or weeks, they’ll grab the opportunity to re-release Nolan’s much-loved classic on the big screen. A date will be decided soon.”
The source also said, “Interstellar will not just be re-released in the 31 IMAX screens in India but also in the 32 4DX/MX4D screens as well as normal 2D screens. They also plan to market it extensively, so that the target audience is well aware of the release plans. In short, they plan to treat it as a new release.”
Interstellar stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain. It is about a group of astronauts who travel through a wormhole near Saturn in search of a new home for mankind.
