David Dencik steps into the dark and dangerous world of Gotham City with a character who operates on the right side of appearances but thrives on the wrong side of the law. The actor plays Markos Szabo, a nightclub owner and influential underworld figure who uses his connections across the city’s most powerful institutions to maintain control over his associates and those caught in his dealings.
Talking about his character Dencik described Szabo as someone whose seemingly glamorous lifestyle conceals a far more sinister reality. While he may appear to be an ordinary nightclub owner, his influence extends into the mayor’s office, the police department and the judicial system. “Marcus Szabo is a nightclub owner and what some people may consider to be a villain in the movie. On the surface, he owns a nightclub, but he’s also a central crime figure in Gotham City. He is known to many people he works in close affiliation with the mayor’s office, the police department, and the judges in the courts. He gives them all bribes. Should anything actually end up in court, he also bribes the jury. He does all of this with a smile on his face. He also likes a good time, beautiful women… I think we know this kind of guy, don’t we?” Dencik said.
What makes Szabo particularly intriguing is the ease with which he navigates this corrupt ecosystem. Rather than relying solely on intimidation, the character appears comfortable operating through charm, money and carefully cultivated relationships. His influence allows him to maintain a grip on people and situations without necessarily having to reveal the extent of his power.
For Dencik, bringing such a character to life was an experience he thoroughly enjoyed. The actor also spoke about how he landed the part, revealing that director James Watkins played a key role in the process. “I also very much liked portraying Szabo. It was a fun challenge. I was very happy when James Watkins called me and asked me to self-tape, which we then got together online and did some more work. At the end of the day, I got the part. And I must say that it felt like a privilege, to be honest,” he added.
Dencik's portrayal brings another layer to Gotham's criminal landscape, where power is not always exercised in the open and the people who appear respectable can be among the most dangerous. Through Szabo, the actor explores a figure whose public persona and criminal dealings exist side by side, making him a compelling presence in the city's underworld.
