Web Series Review: KOHRRA: SEASON 2 is a compelling follow-up that largely lives up to the promise of its predecessor

Director: Sudip Sharma, Faisal Rahman

Synopsis:
KOHRRA: SEASON 2 is the story of two cops trying to unravel a complex case. Assistant sub-inspector of police Amarpal Jasjit Garundi (Barun Sobti) marries Silky (Muskan Arora) and gets transferred to Dalerpura. Dhanwant Kaur (Mona Singh) also gets posted in Dalerpura and Amarpal is asked to report to her. Soon, a shocking murder rocks the sleeping town. A lady named Preet Bajwa (Pooja Bhamrah) is found murdered in her mansion. Dhanwant and Amarpal start working on the case. They find out that Preet was a mother of two kids and was married to Tarsem Singh (Rannvijay Singh). They were settled in the USA, but after a fight, Preet returned to her maternal home. For 7 months, she was residing with her mother (Parminder Pal Kaur), brother Baljinder (Anuraag Arora) and his wife Twinkle (Mandeep Kaur Ghai). As they dig deeper, the cops further discover that Preet was having an affair with a dancer named Johnny Malang (Vikhyat Gulati), who is on the run since the night of the murder. An eyewitness had seen Preet assaulting Johnny a few hours before she was killed. Dhanwant also comes across a voice note from Tarsem in which he threatened to kill her because of a financial matter. Meanwhile, Preet had filed a case against Baljinder over a land dispute. Thus, all three had a clear motive to bump off Preet. Dhanwant and Amarpal start gathering evidence to make their case watertight. On the other hand, their personal life is in shambles. Dhanwant's relationship with her husband Jagdish (Pradhuman Singh Mall) has deteriorated after a personal tragedy. As for Amarpal, he is happily married to Silky; however, things take a sour turn when his pregnant sister-in-law, Rajji (Ekta Sodhi), comes to stay with them for a few days. What happens next forms the rest of the series.

Kohrra: Season 2 Story Review:
Gunjit Chopra, Diggi Sisodia and Sudip Sharma's story stands out from the rest of the murder mysteries. Gunjit Chopra, Diggi Sisodia and Sudip Sharma's screenplay is captivating, though the writing has a few rough edges. Gunjit Chopra, Diggi Sisodia and Sudip Sharma’s dialogues are sharp. Like the previous season, the sequel is peppered with sudden bursts of humour that blend seamlessly into the narrative.

Sudip Sharma and Faisal Rahman's direction is splendid. The first season left a huge mark for its characters, treatment and showcasing Punjab like never before. KOHRRA: SEASON 2 follows the same path, with the makers ensuring that viewers get more than what they would expect. The initial episode might be disappointing, to some extent, as the impactful character of Sub-inspector Balbir Singh (Suvinder Vicky), is missing this time. Thankfully, the direction is so tight that one doesn’t mind after a point. Moreover, the character of Dhanwant Kaur is fleshed out nicely and in no time, one gets involved with her personal as well as professional life. The principal murder angle track is intriguing. A sub-plot of a young lad looking for his missing father is also thrown in. At first, it seems forced, but the way it gets connected to the main story is something to watch out for. The last episode is almost an hour long and yet, it's quite gripping. The twist is unpredictable.

On the flipside, it takes a while to understand who is who and how they are connected to each other. There are instances where the murder plot is forgotten and the subplots take prominence. At such times, it becomes unsettling, albeit only briefly. While Season 1 showed the cops operating under immense pressure following the killing of an NRI and the disappearance of a foreign national, Season 2 lacks that same scrutiny despite another NRI murder, which feels unconvincing. Lastly, though the twist is unexpected, it also raises questions as to why the cops didn’t realize it during their interrogation.

Kohrra: Season 2 Performances:
Barun Sobti, as always, is sincere. Amarpal is flawed yet likeable, and Barun brings this quality to the show with authenticity. Mona Singh is a welcome addition. The role is cliched – a no-nonsense cop fighting her past traumas. But she plays it with panache and she makes sure that viewers get moved with her story. Muskan Arora and Ekta Sodhi have crucial parts and they do well. Pardeep Singh Cheema (Jung Garundi; Amarpal’s brother)’s actions may seem difficult to digest initially, but once the truth emerges, his performance stands out. Pradhuman Singh Mall, usually known for comic roles, essays a diametrically opposite character this time and delivers a strong performance. Anuraag Arora is dependable as always. Prayrak Mehta (Arun Kumar) and Satyakam Anand (Rakesh Kumar) are the surprises of the show. Vikhyat Gulati, Pooja Bhamrah and Rannvijay Singha leave a huge mark. Mandeep Kaur Ghai, Parminder Pal Kaur, Balwinder Bullet (Malli), Rana Ranbir (Raju Sirda), Gurjant Singh Marahar (Pamma), Neeru Sehgal (Loveleen; Tarsem's nanny), Seema (Bunny Gulati) and others do well.

Kohrra: Season 2 music and other technical aspects:
Naren Chandavakar and Benedict Taylor's music is not memorable but is neatly woven into the narrative. Naren Chandavakar and Benedict Taylor's background score has a haunting feel.

Isshaan Ghosh’s cinematography is impactful, especially the early-morning scenes shot amid the 'kohrra'. Mukund Gupta's production design is realistic, while Maria Tharakan and Kirti Kolwankar's costumes are as per the requirement of the various characters. Amritpal Singh's action is as true as it can be. Sanyukta Kaza's editing is unhurried.

Kohrra: Season 2 Review Conclusion:
On the whole, KOHRRA: SEASON 2 is a compelling follow-up that largely lives up to the promise of its predecessor and scores high on atmosphere, performances and emotional depth. With its strong writing, assured direction and an unpredictable climax, it remains a solid watch for fans of crime dramas.

Rating – 3.5 stars
