Vivek Agnihotri, who is often known to share his opinions on social media, recently decided to speak about Shah Rukh Khan and how the megastar is responsible for destroying Bollywood. The Kashmir Files filmmaker accused the actor of only making mainstream commercial cinema to gain box office success but not make people’s films whereas he called himself a ‘people’s filmmaker’ because he always thinks about making films for the people.
Although Vivek Agnihotri maintained that he is a huge fan of Shah Rukh Khan, he also added that he doesn’t approve of the actor’s politics. In an interview with India.com, he spoke about his love-hate emotions for the superstar, as he said, “Do you know I am a fan of SRK? I always say there’s nobody as charismatic as him. But, I don’t like the politics of Shah Rukh Khan. I think they are responsible for destroying a great institution like Bollywood. They have destroyed everything in Bollywood. Now, it’s only PRs, hype, glamour and stardom… anything which is not stardom is not accepted. That’s my problem."
He continued, “My second biggest problem is mediocrity, their hardcore belief that the audience is dumb. I cannot tolerate that. I make people’s films. They make a Box Office film. When their film is successful, it’s a Shah Rukh Khan film which is successful. When my film is successful, it’s the people’s film which is successful. So, we are standing on two different poles: the North Pole and the south pole. However much I love him… sometimes I think it’s like Shakti or Deewar… where you love your father and brother but one is a police officer and one is a smuggler. Now you decide who’s a police officer and who’s a smuggler in our relationship (laughs)”.
He concluded by responding to the question of whether he will work with the megastar or not and stated, “If Shah Rukh Khan is willing to work my way, I have no problem. But, if he is working in my film, the writer and the director will be in the foreground and he will be in the background which he will never accept. So, he will never work with me.”
For the unversed, Shah Rukh Khan kicked off this year with the biggest Bollywood blockbuster Pathaan, co-starring Deepika Padukone and John Abraham. The film is believed to have broken several records in the industry. As for upcoming projects, the superstar is gearing up for the highly anticipated Jawan, co-starring Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi along with an ensemble cast. On the other hand, Vivek Agnihotri is working on the film The Vaccine War, which is set against the backdrop of the pandemic.
