Vishal Bhardwaj reveals why he couldn’t make 2 States with Shah Rukh Khan: “I wanted to set the film in a bank like ICICI, and not in a college that Shah Rukh would’ve preferred”

en Bollywood News Vishal Bhardwaj reveals why he couldn’t make 2 States with Shah Rukh Khan: “I wanted to set the film in a bank like ICICI, and not in a college that Shah Rukh would’ve preferred”

2 States (2014), based on Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller of the same name, was a highly successful film, starring Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. It was made by Abhishek Varman, who made his huge directorial debut with this romantic drama. However, there was a point when it was none other than Vishal Bhardwaj who was going to make the film adaptation of ‘2 States’. What’s more, superstar Shah Rukh Khan was almost on board to play the male lead. The project was then shelved and the rights soon fell into the lap of Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Sajid Nadiadwala’s Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, who ultimately cast Arjun and Alia. More than a decade later, Vishal Bhardwaj opened up on why his version of 2 States with Shah Rukh Khan couldn’t be made.

During an interaction with Mid-Day’s Mayank Shekhar, Vishal Bhardwaj opened up that there was a difference of opinion over where the film should be set. While Vishal wanted to set the story in a bank, Shah Rukh Khan wanted to begin the love story in a college. He also said that it was painful to not make the film. He even clarified that he and the Pathaan (2023) actor are on great terms despite this episode.

Vishal Bhardwaj stated, “We (Shah Rukh Khan and I) had differences over the setting. I wanted to set the film in a bank like ICICI, and not in a college, or elsewhere, that Shah Rukh would’ve preferred. We felt the pain, though. I recently wished him for Jawan. Every time we meet, he repeats, 'We have to do a film together'.”

The novel ‘2 States’, released in 2009, was based on the life of Chetan Bhagat and was a story about a couple coming from two states in India, who face hardships in convincing their parents to approve of their marriage.
