K-pop’s 4th generation ‘It’ boys TOMORROW X TOGETHER, comprising Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Huening Kai, have finally released their long-awaited second studio album 'The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE' on May 31, 2021, with accompanying music video for the title track '0X1=LOVE SONG (I Know I Love You)' featuring Seori.
The music video of the track begins with the quote by Kang Yoo Jeong from 'An Excellent Metaphor For A Hole In Life, Manhole' that reads, "A period of growth can be considered a universal hole that is placed in anyone's life at a certain point. However big or small, as we pass that period of time, we experience spiritual hunger and an empty hole. The clip begins with Yeonjun running away from his house with the car keys and picks up Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Huening Kai as they head to the pool house to spend the summertime together. The scene cuts back to Yeonjun's parents fighting in the house as he plays video games. He runs away with the car for a carefree long drive with his friends; faces a hurdle as their car stops working. The clip moves to the pool house as they enjoy the summer day in the inflatable pool. Interestingly, Taehyun has a lover/loser cast on his hand which is a direct callback to Eddie from the movie, IT.
It goes back and forth between several fun moments they share along the way including accidentally burning down their car. If anyone has kept up with the TXT universe which involves fantasy moments and a magical world, there's a lot of easter eggs from the previous eras of music. The entire music video seems like a dream of Yeonjun where he is reminiscing good times with his friends. You kind of get the feeling at the end of the video that it was all his imagination.
The music video cuts back and forth between the dance routine filmed in the underground basement giving it rock vibes. The song deep dives into how the members are disillusioned by reality but they find their joy in each other. This is sort of something that was seen in 'IT' movie as well. The choreography is quite crisp and with the vocals of quintet along 'Lovers In The Night' singer Seori, they create a magical sound - easily one of the best songs released this year. At the press conference, not only the media was shown the music video prior to the release but TXT also performed the song for the first time showcasing their immense caliber as live performers with those sharp vocals and strong stage presence.
The unequivocal declaration of a boy’s first love takes musical form in TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s new title track: '0X1=LOVESONG (I Know I Love You)' feat. Seori (read “zero by one lovesong”). The trendy Hybrid pop-rock song expresses a boy’s certainty in the love he feels for ‘you,’ who came to him in a world of chaos. The title uses numbers to visually represent that in this world of zero, ‘you’ are my one and only. At the press conference on Monday, May 31, TXT member Huening Kai explained, “The title track is in a trendy pop-rock hybrid genre. It’s a love song about the firm self-assurance of the boy who believes he can trust only his heart toward this girl in this chaotic world.”
Beomgyu explained the meaning behind the unique name of the title track, “The seemingly mathematical formula-like name refers to the love song of a boy, whose world had meant almost nothing (0), encountering a girl (1).”
“I hope people focus on how the members express the change in emotions on the stage. Rather than focusing on how to act, this time, we really tried to become immersed in the emotions,” Taehyun said.
The featured singer in the track Seori is a South Korean singer under ATISPAUS agency. She began her career as a cover artist on YouTube and made her official on May 13, 2020, with the mini-album '?depacse ohw'. The title track is notable for the name of its global contributors. The song is the collaborative effort between producers of HYBE’s labels Slow Rabbit and “hitman” bang, American singer-songwriter and Rock Hip hop artist Mod Sun and No Love For The Middle Child as songwriters.
TXT's leader Soobin revealed how the 26-year-old rapper-songwriter-producer RM of the South Korean juggernaut BTS came to become a part of TXT's album. “Struggling for three weeks over the lyrics, producer Bang asked RM for help if he wanted to, and thankfully, he did,” Soobin said at the press conference. “We were choosing between two versions for the title, and it was RM who said ‘0X1=LOVESONG’ seemed to better suit the song, and that’s how the final name was decided.”
The eight-track studio album includes 'Anti-Romantic', 'Magic', 'Ice Cream', 'What if I had been that PUMA', 'No Rules', 'Dear Sputnik' and 'Frost.' With 'Magic', TXT dived into full-fledged English song which is is dedicated to ‘you’ whose magic thaws the ice that held me. “We wondered how we could return to our global fans who have shown love for us, and the result was ‘Magic,’” Yeonjun said.
The five members of TXT have also been actively involved in the album’s creative process, marking another step of musical growth for the group. Member contributions include Soobin for 'Ice Cream'; Yeonjun, Taehyun and Beomgyu for 'What if I had been that PUMA'; Yeonjun, Huening Kai, Beomgyu, and Taehyun for 'No Rules'; Taehyun and Huening Kai for 'Dear Sputnik' in which the latter lists his first producing credit since debut; and Yeonjun's lyrical credit for 'Frost.'
'The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE' has recorded over 700K pre-orders, marking a new high for the young group. Thanking fans called MOAs for their constant support throughout their 2-year-journey and beyond, Huening said, “Our music is about stories that only we can tell. They are stories about those teenagers, reinterpreted and created into our own performances, and I think that’s why many (in our generation) say they find it relatable.”
Evidently, TOMORROW X TOGETHER are continuing their track of successive growth with each release.
